Heeseung stepped closer, his gaze locking on Sunghoon’s face. “You okay?” he asked, his voice soft but laced with concern. “You’ve got that thousand-yard stare.”
“What’s it to you?” Sunghoon retorted, not even glancing his way. Heeseung frowned. Sunghoon was usually quiet but always laced his replies with sarcasm or sass, especially when it came to Heeseung. But right now, he sounded like a kid who’d just lost his favorite toy.
“Why so sad, newbie?” Heeseung said in a smug tone, hoping to snap him out of it.
“Mind your own business,” Sunghoon replied, finally casting an annoyed look his way.
“Oh, but you are my business,” Heeseung smirked.
“Fuck off, will you?” Sunghoon snapped, clearly fed up.
“Is your name ‘Off’?” Heeseung teased, his tone pushing Sunghoon further.
Sunghoon finally turned to face him, grabbing Heeseung by the collar and yanking him forward. Heeseung barely moved, but they were now close enough that he could see the undeniable beauty in Sunghoon’s eyes.
“Stop it,” Sunghoon’s voice cracked. The moment it did, Heeseung knew this wasn’t annoyance—it was agony, rage, pain. His chest tightened at the sound, and he silently vowed that he’d destroy anyone who was the cause of this.
Before he even realized it, Heeseung’s smug expression melted away, replaced by a gentleness he didn’t know he possessed. He stared into Sunghoon’s eyes with a warmth that confused the younger man, but it sparked something deep within him. No one had ever looked at him like this before.
Sunghoon’s grip on Heeseung’s collar loosened, but then tightened again. What happened next caught Heeseung off guard.
Sunghoon leaned forward, resting his forehead against Heeseung’s chest, right where his heart—his supposedly non-beating heart—was. “Please hold me. It hurts.”
Without a second thought, Heeseung wrapped an arm protectively around Sunghoon’s waist, pulling him close. He felt Sunghoon’s tense muscles slowly relax against his chest, though Sunghoon still held tightly to his collar. There was something addictive about Heeseung’s embrace, something strange and unfamiliar, yet undeniably comforting.
It was wrong, but it felt so right. Sunghoon had never found this kind of comfort in a human before, but somehow, in Heeseung—a vampire—he found exactly what he’d been craving. Vampires weren’t supposed to have beating hearts, but Heeseung felt like an exception.
Heeseung froze as the silence around them made him acutely aware of the sound in his chest—his heart. It was racing. His heart was beating. Heeseung had studied vampires enough to know their hearts don’t beat, except when they’re near someone they care about deeply.
Is this really happening? he thought, his mind spiraling with confusion. But then he heard a sob. A sob? From Sunghoon.
“Wait... are you crying?” Heeseung blurted out before he could stop himself.
Sunghoon tensed, trying to pull away, but Heeseung held him tighter, pulling him back into his embrace. “Cry all you want, newbie. Just don’t tell me, or I’ll end up killing someone, and I don’t want to traumatize you.”
Sunghoon felt something warm spread through him. “Why are you doing this?” he asked, his voice fragile.
“What?” Heeseung was genuinely confused.
“Being nice to me. Don’t do it,” Sunghoon replied, pulling away slightly to look into Heeseung’s eyes.
“Why?”
“Nice people scare me more than the bad ones do. What are you planning? What do you need my trust for?” Sunghoon asked, his gaze sharp.
Heeseung’s expression hardened. “Give me the names, and I swear to my mother, I’ll burn every single one of them alive,” he said, dead serious.
He could sense the pain inside Sunghoon, the deep mistrust that wouldn’t be easily won over. But Heeseung wasn’t giving up. This wasn’t just a challenge—it was a war. And he was willing to go down fighting.
“I-I want to go home,” Sunghoon mumbled, breaking eye contact, glancing anywhere but at Heeseung.
“I’ll take you,” Heeseung replied, his voice soft as he gently took Sunghoon’s wrist. Sunghoon’s heart pounded in his chest—overwhelmed, confused. Was it hurting? He couldn’t tell.
When they reached the car and got inside, Sunghoon reached for his seatbelt, but before he could click it in, Heeseung lightly brushed his hand away and leaned over to fasten it himself.
“What are you doing?” Sunghoon asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Well, you’re a guest in my car, and guests should be treated like royalty,” Heeseung replied, a teasing lilt back in his voice.
Sunghoon rolled his eyes. “Back to your arrogant vampire self?”
“Back to your I'm sassy and I'll eat you up, but not physically self?” Heeseung shot back, smirking.
For some reason, Sunghoon found it funny—so funny he couldn’t help but laugh. It was unexpected, uncontrollable, and genuine.
Heeseung froze, taken aback by the sound. It was the first time he had heard Sunghoon laugh, and the sound was intoxicating—melodic in a way that made Heeseung's chest feel lighter.
When Sunghoon’s laughter finally subsided and he caught Heeseung staring at him, he frowned. “What? Why are you staring?”
“Do it again,” Heeseung said, the words slipping out before he could stop himself.
“Do what?”
“Laugh,” Heeseung nodded. “I want to hear it again.”
“I can’t just laugh on command,” Sunghoon said, feeling a bit awkward.
“Oh, you will,” Heeseung replied with a mischievous glint in his eyes.
“How—” Sunghoon’s words were cut off by his own uncontrollable laughter as Heeseung began tickling him. Sunghoon laughed harder than he had in a long, long time. And the reason for it? The very man he found so annoying.
