"Humanity is just beginning, the new birth is here." A weak and pale Duncan Jefferson speaked in a crowd full of confident followers of Dr. Jefferson with a breaking voice as the green illumination he proudly developed invaded the room. Jefferson was no more present in the room. Vanished and ascended into his own creation, hoping to see his wish come true from inside of it.
The 2012-2013 cycle recently started at St. Nicholas High School in Houston, Texas. Brilliant student Jaret Brannan just entered his senior year. Since last year, he received scholarships from many universities around the globe; he had the potential to be the face of the next generation of the world in science. He had a passion for programming related careers and had his eyesight focused on computer network architecture. He already decided he would move to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and get a job he could love. Jared never lowered his gaze, groaned, or cried. Jaret distributed a feeling that made everyone infect his big opened smile. Without a doubt, the luckiest girl in the high school was Jaret's girlfriend, Sally. Sally Ciccone and Jaret never discussed, fought, or disagreed. It was known in their high school that everyone envied them. Sally's smile when she was holding Jaret's hand just showed pure love. Totally sure they will get married if you ask me. Jaret's dream to dance with his wife and mother slowly became more true, as Jaret's mother, Laura Brannan, had beaten the cancer she had been fighting with since Jaret was 6 years old. Jaret's father, Nolan Brannan, was key for Laura's treatment. All the money he gained as manager of a pizza production company went to Laura's chemotherapy and Jaret's tuition fees. Can life get any better for Jaret?
The first minute he stepped into his high school, he knew it would be his golden age. He slightly visualized the building at the entrance. A couple of people were standing up in front of it as well, they looked as if they were waiting for something; a big event that would shake their lives just as Jaret's final high school year. Jaret took a deep breath and raised his head to look at the shining sky.
"Life's pretty good lately, all that was gray before I see it as shining gold now!" told Jaret to his friend Charles.
"I know I shouldn't envy my best friend, but-"
"Oh my god, look! Is that a shooting star!?" Jaret interrupted Charles with surprise in his voice.
Charles squinted his eyes into that gray big stain among the clouds.
"I think shooting stars aren't that big."
"It might be for a big wish then!"
Despite Jaret's belief that it was a shooting star, it didn't seem to fall or move. Suddenly, that gray stain multiplied itself in the sky. It wasn't just a stain any more, as it took the form of an oval with wings, similar to those sci-fi alien spaceships. The other spaceships surrounded the original gray stain and started to shoot flashing blue lasers, just as if it were an insane dream coming back from the cinema. Five spaceships were fighting in the sky. Charles wasn't able to make a noise or move. On the other hand, Jaret's face turned into a shock of amazement, and a sound of excitement coming out of his mouth.
"Charles!! Are you seeing the same thing as I do?! Why aren't you as excited as me?!" Jaret yelled, raising the tone of his voice.
"Start recording!! Picture that!! What are you waiting for?!" He couldn't stop yelling with excitement while shaking, front and back, Charles' paralyzed body.
At one point, the moon got involved in the outer space conflict. It was still pretty far away for the ones on Earth, making it difficult to see. However, one thing was right; whatever that thing was, it was altering the natural order. How could something possibly carry and move the whole moon? The moon then faced the people on Earth and began approaching in an unmeasurable velocity. Jaret's pupils then reflected how the moon was pointing to his face.
"Hey Charles, what do you think would happen if someday the moon crashes into the Earth?"
"It's what we're about to see." That was the last time Charles ever spoke.
Just as he closed his lips, a light green, shining beam almost blinded and made deaf all those who witnessed it. An annoying shriek got stuck in his ear. It was the first time the world saw Jared screaming in pain. When he could open his eyes again, everything was turning black. The high school was being disintegrated, tree by tree, rock by rock, wall by wall. As the dark haze reached Jaret and Charles, it left behind neon green lines that conformed the structure of the buildings, as if it was being scanned, creating the basis for the environment of a videogame that would later be designed. Jaret began repeating in his mind the words "this isn't real." But as if the world was trying to punish Jaret, the couple of people who were standing next to him deformed. Their bodies were covered in one of those suits Jaret saw they used in the chemistry labs. They were full body, thigh-fitting, rubber-like suits with thick gloves and heavy boots, ensuring no skin exposure. Jaret could only see the person inside through the transparent visor, but the only thing he saw was how their faces submerged on their own heads. Their bodies ate their faces from the inside and just left a blurry dark stain in the visor. They were no longer humans. Jaret took a few steps back trying to run, but he realized there was no place where he could go. His heartbeats increased, it hurted how hard it went. He stopped breathing from the nose and began to breath madly from his mouth. His respiration and grief screams were the only things coming out of his mouth. Jaret's world fell apart when one of the non-humans aggressively colocated its metal glove on his all-time best friend's mouth and dragged him to the void.
"Wait, no! Please! No, no, no, no, no!!" Jaret got out of breath, screaming for mercy.
"Wait, please! I need you to hear me." One of the non-human creatures stepped in front of Jaret, waiting for him to speak.
"Can I have my last wish, please?" He received no response from the creature.
"Listen to me." Final tears ran out of Jaret's eyes.
Dark consumed Jaret's body, putting him apart from his perfect reality.
