She sang for love, but the gods demanded a different tune..
Prologue:
Selene's Song
The soft ripple of waves kissed the rocky shore, the scent of saltwater heavy in the air. Selene perched on a smooth boulder, her dark hair cascading over her shoulders like the night sky. Her voice drifted over the sea, a haunting melody that beckoned ships into the jagged rocks. She had claimed many with her song—sailors, captains, even nobles. All of them fell victim to her enchantment, and all of them met their end beneath the crashing waves.
But tonight, her voice faltered. Her song felt empty, lacking the power it once held. She gazed across the horizon, waiting for her next victim, but something inside her twisted. Something was changing.
"The gods watch you," a voice whispered from the darkening sky. Selene's heart thudded, the voice stirring something ancient within her.
"They always have," she muttered, more to herself than to the wind. But this time, the gods weren't merely watching. They were coming.
Chapter 1: The Mortal Who Did Not Fall
Selene had never failed. She was a Siren, after all. Her beauty and voice were weapons, powerful enough to sink ships and bend men to her will. So when she set her sights on the merchant's son, Aelion, she expected him to fall like all the rest.
But Aelion was different.
His eyes—sharp, piercing blue—held hers from across the tavern, and when she sang her sweet melody, his gaze never faltered. He did not rise to her, nor did he look away. Instead, he smiled, as if he knew something she didn't. As if he saw through her.
Panic gripped her heart, though she'd never admit it. She sang louder, pouring all of her magic into the notes, but Aelion didn't budge. He merely stood, smiled again, and turned away.
"No..." Selene breathed, watching him leave. She had never been ignored, never been resisted. Her power flickered, her confidence shaking.
Aelion walked into the night, and for the first time, Selene's heart began to stir. Was this what love felt like? Or was it something far more dangerous?
Chapter 2: A Deal with the Divine
Kali Ma watched from the heavens, her many arms folded, her eyes glowing with the light of a thousand suns. The Siren had been warned before—her manipulative ways had tipped the balance too many times. Now, the gods were ready to intervene.
"Kali Ma," a voice interrupted the goddess's thoughts. It was Hephaestus, the god of fire and transformation. His hammer gleamed in the celestial light, ready to forge a new fate. "It is time."
The goddess nodded slowly, her voice ringing with the weight of eternity. "Let her be tested. She has lived too long without consequence."
Back on the rocky shore, Selene felt a tremor beneath her feet. She knew this was not the simple shifting of the tide. No, this was a divine intervention.
She was no longer just a Siren. She was a pawn in a much larger game.
Chapter 3: Falling for Her Own Trap
Aelion returned to the village every evening, and every evening, Selene sang, but not for the crowds. She sang only for him. Though he acted as if her song didn't affect him, she saw the slight flicker in his eyes. He was not immune to her charm—no man could be.
Her pride returned, as did her ambition. If she could make him fall in love with her, perhaps her waning power would return in full. Perhaps the gods would let her be.
She lured him into the cove one night, her voice soft, inviting. Aelion followed, entranced at last—or so she thought.
"What do you want from me?" he asked, standing mere inches from her now. His eyes glittered with a strange knowing, as though he wasn't just a mortal at all.
Selene's smile faltered. "I want..." She hesitated. What "did" she want? Power? Validation? Or was it something deeper, something she had never allowed herself to feel?
Before she could answer, the ground trembled again. Kali Ma's voice echoed through the night air.
"The time for games is over, Siren."
Selene gasped as the ground beneath her cracked, a fiery light pouring from the earth. Kali Ma appeared, her many eyes gleaming with righteous fury. Beside her, Aelion smiled.
"You—" Selene started. But she was too late.
Aelion was no mortal.
He had been sent by the gods, a test to see whether Selene would repeat her toxic cycle or finally break free. And she had failed.
Chapter 4: Karmic Debt
Selene stood before Kali Ma, her power stripped from her like a crumbling mask. The goddess towered over her, eyes glowing with the weight of countless souls. Selene's breath came in shallow gasps.
"I didn't know," she whispered, voice trembling, her once-powerful song reduced to nothing.
"You knew," Kali Ma's voice boomed, "but you chose to ignore your conscience. Your love was not true, only another attempt to manipulate."
Aelion, still standing at the goddess's side, looked down at Selene with pity. "If you had let go of your need for control, you would have passed the test. But now, you are bound by the very karma you created."
Selene fell to her knees, the waves crashing in the distance, far removed from the power she once held over them. Her heart, once untouchable, felt the sting of betrayal, of longing, of love lost, And the gods would not spare her.
Epilogue: The Song that Never Ends
Selene is no longer the proud Siren of the rocks. Stripped of her power, she sings alone, a haunting melody to the night sky. Her voice carries the weight of her karmic debt, a debt that will take lifetimes to repay.
But as her song echoes across the sea, a single tear falls into the waves. Perhaps, one day, she will sing a different tune—one born of redemption, not manipulation.
Until then, the gods listen. And they wait.
What would you do if you were tested by the gods? Could you break your karmic cycle, or would you fall like Selene?
