Title:Let me down slowly
The night had an eerie stillness to it, one that made every sound seem louder than it was. You stood outside, staring at the sky, the cool air biting at your skin, but it didn't compare to the cold sinking into your chest. You felt like the world was slipping away beneath you, slowly unraveling, piece by piece. The street was empty, the silence thick, and all you could hear was the soft echo of your own breath.
And then there was Robin.
He stood a few feet away, hands shoved deep into his jacket pockets, eyes cast down to the pavement. He hadn't said much since you'd asked him to meet you here. Maybe he didn't need to maybe you both already knew what this was. His usual confidence, the quiet strength he always carried with him, seemed absent tonight. There was a hesitation in the way he stood, like he wasn't sure what to do or say to fix this.
This whatever it had turned into felt fragile, like a thread pulled too tight, ready to snap.
The words of Let Me Down Slowly by Alec Benjamin played in your mind, a quiet ache that mirrored what you felt in this moment. The lyrics spoke of holding on just a little longer, of not wanting to be abandoned without a fight, but knowing deep down that something was slipping away. That's what this felt like: the slow end of something that once felt invincible.
Robin finally looked up at you, his eyes dark and full of something you didn't want to name sadness, regret, maybe even guilt. He took a step closer, but he stopped himself before he could get too close. You both knew this was the end, but neither of you could bring yourselves to say it.
"Are we... are we really doing this?" His voice was soft, but you could hear the tension behind it. He wasn't asking because he didn't know the answer. He was asking because he was hoping there might still be a way to pull you back from the edge.
You looked at him, feeling the weight of everything unsaid hanging between you. "I don't know, Robin," you whispered, your voice cracking slightly. "It feels like we're falling apart, and I don't know how to stop it."
He flinched at your words, like they were the last confirmation he didn't want to hear. You could see the frustration building behind his eyes the same frustration you'd felt for weeks. The way you'd both tried to hold onto something that was unraveling, but neither of you knew how to make it work anymore.
If you wanna go, then I'll be so lonely...
"I don't want to lose you," Robin said, his voice barely above a whisper. There was a desperation there, one you hadn't heard from him before. He was always the strong one, the one who kept it together. But tonight, that façade was slipping. "But I don't know how to fix this either."
You felt a lump form in your throat, the weight of his words sinking deep into your chest. You didn't want to lose him either. Robin had been your anchor for so long, the person who made everything feel a little less heavy, a little more bearable. But now, it felt like you were both drowning, and no matter how hard you tried to stay afloat, the current kept pulling you under.
"I don't want to lose you either," you said quietly, your voice trembling. "But it feels like we're already letting go."
Robin's face tightened, his jaw clenching as he looked away for a moment. He didn't want to hear it, and neither did you. But deep down, you both knew it was true. The connection you'd shared, the bond that had once felt so unbreakable, had been fraying for a while now. You'd both tried to ignore it, tried to hold on, but sometimes, holding on wasn't enough.
Could you find a way to let me down slowly? A little sympathy, I hope you can show me...
He took a shaky breath, stepping forward again, this time not stopping. He stood right in front of you now, so close you could feel the warmth of his presence, even as the cold air wrapped around both of you. His hand reached out, gently brushing against yours. You could feel the hesitation in his touch, like he wasn't sure if he had the right to hold you anymore.
"I don't want to hurt you," he said, his voice breaking slightly. "But I can't keep pretending that things are the same. I don't want to leave, but if this is how it ends..." He trailed off, his words hanging in the air like a weight neither of you could lift.
You swallowed hard, feeling the sting of tears in your eyes. You didn't want to cry, not now, not in front of him. But the pain of losing him of losing what you had was too much to hold back.
"Just don't let me fall apart all at once," you whispered, echoing the song that had been playing in your mind since this conversation began. "If this is the end... just don't leave me like it never mattered."
Robin's hand tightened around yours, and for a moment, it felt like he might pull you closer, like he might hold you one last time. But instead, he let out a shaky breath and nodded, his eyes filled with a sorrow you hadn't seen before.
"I won't," he promised, his voice barely audible. "I won't let you fall like that."
You stood there in the cold, hands still intertwined, hearts heavy with the weight of everything slipping away. Neither of you moved, not yet. Even as you knew this was the end, you both held on for just a moment longer, unwilling to let go completely.
Because even though you were breaking, even though this was goodbye, there was still a part of you that didn't want to fall. Not yet. Not all at once. And in the quiet, in the stillness of the night, Robin made sure you wouldn't have to.
Not tonight.
