Welcome to the month of Preptober! Over the next 31 days, we are here to help our community of writers prepare for November's 30 days of writing, which challenges authors to write 50k words during that month. To get you thinking about your next story, the ambassadors from four profiles: ContemporaryLit ChickLit WattpadAfterDark and lgbtq have created some fun challenges that we'll be hosting from each of our profiles.

- Here's how it works -

We will host weekly writing challenges: Each week in October, we'll post a new prompt focusing on an essential storytelling element. These challenges will not be judged, but we encourage our community of writers to share their work and provide feedback to other participants.

Week 1: Create Your Main Character - Develop a detailed arc for your MC and explore their emotional and physical obstacles. We've also included a bonus challenge of creating a supporting character.

Week 2: Create Your Antagonist - Whether it's a person or a situation, create an obstacle that your MC will need to overcome. We've also included a bonus challenge to write a scene between your MC and your antagonist.

Week 3: Design Your World - Design a unique world and describe how the world impacts your characters. We've also included a bonus challenge of creating a rich history for your world.

Week 4: Craft a Story Arc - Write out a story arc that includes your characters and the world they live in.

Every few days, we'll offer two-word prompts on our message board to inspire your scenes, character explorations, or backstory ideas!

- Weekly writing prompts in detail -

WEEK 1 (Oct 1st - 7th): Create a main character: include a character arc (how you'd like to see them grow through the story), and any physical or emotional/mental obstacles they must navigate as they progress. Are they encumbered by any handicaps or obstacles (status, class, obligations, etc.) that interfere?

BONUS PROMPT for WEEK 1: Create a supporting character for your MC: include how they help the MC grow. Like the MC, are they encumbered by any handicaps or obstacles (status, class, obligations, etc.) that interfere?

WEEK 2 (Oct 8th - 14th): Create an antagonist. This can be a character or a situation that the MC is forced to engage with and overcome. If it's a character, what is their backstory? If it's a situation, what are the details involved?

BONUS PROMPT for WEEK 2: Write a scene between the antagonist and your main character. The scene does not have to be included in the story. This would be an exercise to see how well you've developed these characters and how they would interact.

WEEK 3 (Oct 15th - 21st): Create a world/setting: describe this world, its inhabitants, and how your character engages with it. How does the world impact your MC's progress and growth?

BONUS PROMPT for WEEK 3: Write your world's history. Consider including the origins of the culture, traditions, belief systems, government, class system, etc.

WEEK 4 (Oct 22nd - 28th): Write a story arc that includes the world you've created and the characters who live in it. You can find tips and examples of a story arc by following this link to the @ImproveYourWriting profile (link to Plot to Published Story Arc chapter)
