The sound of children’s laughter rang out, light and carefree, drifting through the open air of Mizukawa Village (水川村). It was a gentle melody, carried by the breeze like the songs of the birds flying freely, filling the village with a warmth that softened even the coldest days. At the heart of this joyful symphony was Asahikari Preschool (朝光保育園), the only kindergarten in the village. Despite its humble size, it was always alive with the boundless energy of youth, the playground a colorful tapestry of movement and sound.
Set at the edge of the village, Asahikari Preschool stood nestled between ancient trees, their broad branches providing a natural canopy that shaded the small courtyard. The building itself was simple, yet inviting, with wooden walls worn smooth by time, and windows wide enough to let in the golden rays of morning light. It was as if the very sun smiled upon this little corner of Mizukawa, blessing it with warmth and serenity.
Though the village was small, and Asahikari the only preschool, the children who attended were never lacking in number or spirit. Every morning, their cheerful voices rose with the dawn, filling the village streets as they raced towards the preschool, their faces glowing with excitement. In the yard, small feet pattered against the earth, kicking up dust as they ran after each other in games only they understood. The swings creaked softly under their weight, the merry-go-round spun lazily, and the sandbox was filled with the quiet concentration of tiny hands sculpting their imaginary worlds.
Teachers, with kind faces and patient smiles, watched over them from the edges, their eyes twinkling as they listened to the laughter. Each child, wrapped in the innocence of youth, seemed to bring with them the brightness of the rising sun—fitting for a place called Asahikari, "Morning Light."
The preschool had long been a cornerstone of the village. It was more than a place for children to learn their numbers and letters; it was where the seeds of friendship were sown, and where the villagers could glimpse the future in the bright, curious eyes of the next generation. Even the eldest villagers, who passed by on their daily walks, would pause to smile at the sight of the children playing, reminded of days long gone.
Asahikari Preschool was not just a school—it was a symbol of the village's heart, of continuity, of the peaceful life they all shared. In this tranquil corner of Mizukawa Village, the children grew like the flowers in spring, nurtured by the light that only a place like this could provide.
