Dominic sits on his couch, phone in hand, his thumb hovering over the keyboard as he types out his reply. His heart pounds in his chest, anticipation building with each second.

DOMINIC (texting):
Hey! Long time no chat! What you been up to?

He presses send. The seconds stretch into what feels like hours. He glances at his phone every couple of seconds, waiting, feeling the weight of years of silence between them.

The phone finally pings, screen lighting up. He quickly unlocks it.

SERENA (text):
Nothing much, I just moved back to Heights last week actually.

Dominic exhales deeply, a wave of relief washing over him.

DOMINIC (texting):
Oh cool, you got your own place, or staying with family?

The reply comes almost instantly.

SERENA (text):
I'm actually staying with Melody. You remember Melody, right?

Dominic chuckles to himself, shaking his head.

DOMINIC (texting):
I remember she hates me.😅

A moment later, her response pops up.

SERENA (text):
No, she doesn't hate you. She just doesn't like most people that aren't me or whatever girl she's into at the moment.

Dominic grins, his fingers tapping away at the keyboard.

DOMINIC (texting):
Fair enough.

The conversation flows effortlessly, like the years of silence never happened. They continue to exchange messages, talking about everything and nothing, diving back into the comfortable rhythm of their past.

After a while, Dominic hesitates before typing his next question.

DOMINIC (texting):
So... why did you decide to reach out after so long?

The reply comes fast, catching him off guard.

SERENA (text):
Well, I was back in town, and I knew I wanted to talk to you again. But earlier today, Mel and I were at a café when we heard that song you used to play on your games... I turned and noticed it was you in the car, playing it and singing like a little goofball. 😭😭

Dominic stares at the message, his mouth falling open slightly. His cheeks burning red hot with embarrassment. He quickly types his reply.

DOMINIC (texting):
😳
Her reply follows just seconds later.

SERENA (text):
No, no, it was cute, honestly. 😂☺️

Dominic stared at his phone, a warm smile spreading across his face as he leaned back on the couch. Every word exchanged with Serena felt like a step closer to closing the years of distance between them.

Her latest message popped up on his screen.

Hey, I got some important stuff to take care of in the morning, but I'll talk to you tomorrow.

He quickly typed his response.

Yeah, definitely! Goodnight!

Goodnight! she replied.

Dominic set his phone down, letting out a small, uncontrollable laugh. He couldn't contain it. The happiness bubbled up inside him, spilling over in tiny, unexpected giggles. It was like a weight had lifted off him—talking to Serena again felt so right, like no time had passed. He felt like he was floating.
