The following morning, Calliope decided to muster the courage to ask Lucas for a small favor. She had been feeling increasingly trapped in their secluded life, and the idea of grocery shopping—even something as mundane as that—seemed like a chance for a break from their home.
"Lucas," she said, her voice steady but laced with uncertainty. "Can we go grocery shopping today? I need some things for dinner."
He turned to her, eyebrows raised, a hint of surprise flickering across his face. "Grocery shopping?"
"Yeah, just... you know, to get some fresh things," she continued, trying to sound casual, even though her heart raced at the thought of leaving the cabin.
"Alright, let's do it," he replied with a casual shrug, a smile creeping onto his lips. "But let's make it a little more interesting. How about we hit up the farmers' market?"
The suggestion surprised her, but she nodded, excitement flickering within her. A farmers' market would offer a chance to see other people, maybe even interact with the outside world for a moment.
A short drive later, they arrived at a vibrant market filled with colorful stalls, the air rich with the scent of fresh produce and baked goods. Calliope stepped out of the truck, her senses overwhelmed by the bustling atmosphere and the sun shining brightly overhead.
As they wandered through the market, Lucas's hand rested possessively on her lower back, guiding her through the crowd. Calliope felt a thrill as she looked around, her eyes wide with wonder at the array of fruits, vegetables, and handmade crafts.
"Look at all this," she said, her voice filled with awe as she admired the fresh tomatoes and crisp greens. "It's so colorful."
Lucas chuckled, watching her with a fond expression. "You're like a kid in a candy store."
After filling their basket with fresh produce, Calliope's gaze fell upon a small stall adorned with beautiful, flowing dresses. One in particular caught her eye: a delicate sundress in olive green, with patterns of white flowers that danced across the fabric. She felt drawn to it, imagining how lovely it would look against her skin, especially with the way the sunlight filtered through the trees.
"Wow, that's beautiful," she whispered, almost to herself, as she walked closer to the stall.
Lucas watched her, his expression shifting as he caught on to her admiration. "Do you like it?" he asked, his tone suddenly serious.
Calliope hesitated, biting her lip. "I do, but I shouldn't—"
Before she could finish, Lucas stepped forward, speaking to the vendor. "How much for that dress?"
The vendor smiled, glancing at Calliope, who stood wide-eyed with disbelief.
"It's $40," the vendor replied.
Lucas pulled out his wallet without hesitation, handing over the cash. "I'll take it."
Calliope's heart raced. "Lucas, you don't have to—"
"I want you to have it," he interrupted, turning to her with a grin. "You'll look great in it at home. It's perfect for you."
As he handed the dress to her, she felt a mix of gratitude and unease. "Thank you," she said softly, holding the fabric against her chest.
He leaned closer, lowering his voice to just above a whisper. "You'll wear it for me, won't you?"
She nodded, feeling the weight of his gaze on her.
Calliope felt a flutter of joy that was quickly mixed with an undercurrent of apprehension. She clutched the dress close, almost as if it were a lifeline. They continued through the bustling market, and her senses danced with the vibrant sights and sounds surrounding her.
