The words echoed in Seraphina's mind long after Ilyana had spoken them: The fire will teach you. But how could something so wild and untamed be taught? She felt the heat coursing through her veins now, stronger than ever before, but controlling it was like trying to grasp a flame in her bare hands.

The crowd in the square had dispersed, their whispers following Seraphina even as she made her way home. The Council of Elders had urged the people to prepare for the worst—the volcano had awakened, and though the Phoenix was part of their protection, it was Seraphina's power that they now looked to. The burden weighed heavily on her, more than she had ever imagined.

Rowan was silent as he walked beside her, casting her the occasional glance, but he said nothing. He didn't need to. Seraphina could feel the tension between them, the weight of the unspoken questions.

When they reached her home, a modest stone house near the edge of the city, she finally broke the silence.

"I don't know how to do this," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. "How am I supposed to control something like the Phoenix's fire?"

Rowan looked at her with concern but also determination. "You've always been strong, Seraphina. If anyone can figure this out, it's you."

"I'm not strong enough for this," she said, shaking her head. "I've never been enough. What if I hurt people? What if—"

"You won't," Rowan interrupted, his voice firm. He stepped closer, placing a hand on her shoulder. "You won't hurt anyone. We'll figure this out together, like we always do."

His words were reassuring, but Seraphina couldn't shake the fear gnawing at her. The fire inside her was a living thing, a force that pulsed and throbbed, begging to be unleashed. And she didn't know how to stop it.

Suddenly, a sharp pain lanced through her chest, and she gasped, clutching at her heart. Her knees buckled, and she would have fallen if Rowan hadn't caught her.

"Seraphina!" he shouted, panic in his voice.

But Seraphina couldn't respond. All she could feel was the fire—the heat building, growing hotter and hotter until it threatened to consume her. The pain was unbearable, and she cried out as flames erupted from her hands, searing the air around them. Rowan stumbled backward, his eyes wide with shock as he watched the fire swirl around her, wild and uncontrollable.

Seraphina tried to stop it, tried to push the flames back, but it was no use. They roared to life, spiraling upward like a tornado of fire. Her vision blurred, and the world around her faded as the flames took over.

And then, through the haze of heat and light, she saw it—a figure in the flames.

The Phoenix.

It wasn't just a statue or a symbol. It was real, its wings spread wide, its body made of pure fire. The great bird hovered before her, its fiery eyes locked onto hers, and for a moment, everything else fell away.

You are mine, the Phoenix seemed to say, though no words were spoken. Its voice was in her mind, a deep and ancient presence that sent shivers down her spine. You are my vessel, and together, we will rise.

Seraphina wanted to scream, to run, but she couldn't move. The Phoenix's fire wrapped around her, binding her to its will, and she knew in that moment that there was no escape. The fire wasn't just something she could control—it was a part of her, a living, breathing entity that had chosen her for reasons she couldn't yet understand.

You cannot fight me, the Phoenix whispered. You are the flame.

With a sudden burst of energy, the flames around her vanished, leaving Seraphina gasping for air. She collapsed onto the ground, her body shaking, her skin still tingling from the heat. Rowan rushed to her side, his face pale with fear.

"Seraphina! Are you okay?" he asked, his voice frantic.

She nodded weakly, though her entire body ached. "I—I think so," she whispered. But in truth, she wasn't sure. The Phoenix had spoken to her, and she could still feel its presence, lurking beneath the surface of her skin.

"What happened?" Rowan asked, helping her to her feet. His hands trembled slightly as he steadied her, his eyes searching hers for answers.

Seraphina shook her head, trying to make sense of what she had just experienced. "The Phoenix... it was inside me. It spoke to me. I couldn't stop it."

Rowan's eyes widened in shock. "It spoke to you? What did it say?"

"That I'm its vessel," she replied, her voice barely audible. "That together, we will rise."

Rowan swallowed hard, his face pale. "What does that mean?"

"I don't know," Seraphina said, her voice trembling. "But I think... I think it means the Phoenix's power isn't something I can control. It's a part of me."

A heavy silence fell between them as Rowan processed her words. Seraphina's heart raced as she realized the gravity of the situation. The Phoenix wasn't just a force of nature—it was inside her, and it was alive.

Before either of them could speak again, a distant rumble echoed through the city, followed by a sudden gust of hot wind. Seraphina's heart skipped a beat as she turned to look toward the volcano. The smoke rising from its peak had thickened, and a red glow pulsed ominously from deep within the mountain.

"We need to go to the Council," Rowan said urgently. "If the Phoenix is waking up inside you, they need to know."

Seraphina nodded, though fear clung to her like a shadow. The fire was rising, and with it, the city's fate hung in the balance.

But even as the fear threatened to consume her, she could feel the Phoenix's power stirring within her, stronger than ever. And for the first time, she wondered if this fire—this ancient force—wasn't just her curse.

It might be her salvation.

Chapter Three delves into Seraphina's first encounter with the Phoenix as a living force within her, showing that its power is not something she can easily control, but something she must learn to embrace. The tension between fear and power continues to build, with the volcano's activity growing alongside her awakening abilities.
