We were left stunned and speechless. No one could eat anymore after that.
"I cannot stay here." Morta pulled the chair out. "I don't care if I'm buried under ten feet of snow, I am not spending one second longer in this house if he's here."
"I should go, too." Thar stood up, holding the golden envelope between his fingers gingerly. "I have to talk to Darth and Lange, ask them about the meaning of this, and see what they're going to say."
"Okay." I nodded, pain gathering in my throat. "I- I'll see if we can clear the driveway and-"
"It's probably not even that bad." Morta marched to the door. "He's probably trying to trick us into staying so he can sell our souls to the demon."
At least I wasn't the only one pissed off.
I swallowed the pain, and hoped tears wouldn't overtake me while I talked.
"You can take one of my cars if-"
Nope. The tears were coming.
"Morta." Amma said, her voice stern.
"What?" She turned on her heel, a frown etched between her eyebrows.
They all looked at me, and I just couldn't hide the tears. They had somewhere to go. If not home, then the Academy. I had nowhere. All I could do was stay here, with him in this house. Alone. Well, unless a fucking demon kept me company.
Morta shook her head, "I'm out of here."
"Morta-" Amma called, but she was already out of the dining room.
The three of us followed her to the front door, but as she opened, a gush of wind and snow swept over the doorstep, making her shut the door quickly and stepped away from it. Panic shimmered in her eyes as she turned around.
"Yeah, we're stuck here."
My shoulders sagged in what I hoped looked like regret, and not relief. The four of us looked at each other, and I saw just how much they wanted to leave. I understood them. Why would they want to stay in this cursed house?
"What if a demon eats us?" Amma asked and pulled the blanket over her shoulder.
"I've been here for three months and I'm still alive." I shrugged. "And you can sleep in the same room."
"Amma and I?" Morta quipped, head lifting. "Alright. We can do that."
"Okay, sure." Amma glanced between the two of us. "I hope it's near your room."
I nodded, then turned to Thar, "Wanna try your luck outside?"
He offered a small smile, "I'll bet you five buck that the wind lifted my car and smashed it against a tree."
My smile matched his, but my stomach still upturned. Something about this entire situation was... fishy. Maybe I really had turned paranoid, but it felt like everything happening around me wasn't a coincidence. Even a snowstorm. Sweat coated my neck.
"You can stay here, too." I said finally.
Thar nodded, "Thank you."
