"Are... are you a ghost?" I ventured, my voice barely above a whisper.
"Ah, I prefer... the seventh of the seven wonders of this school!" he replied, a wide grin spreading across his face. The way he narrowed his eyes at me with that smile felt both charming and disconcerting as he settled casually on the bathroom sink.
There was no way... I was really talking to a ghost!
But if I truly was, there was no way I was going to miss this opportunity! I had so many questions swirling in my mind. "Wait, you're saying—you're Hanako?"
I tilted my head in confusion. He sounded so much like a guy, yet looking at him made it hard to tell.
"Yeah! You called?" He flashed a peace sign with both hands, a gesture I'd never fully understood. But right now, my thoughts were too jumbled to focus on that. "Mind telling me who you are?"
"But you look like a boy..." My gaze shifted away from him, overwhelmed by the strangeness of the situation.
"That's 'cause I am a boy!" He maintained that playful smile, clearly unfazed.
"Why are you in here?" I asked, stepping back a little, feeling a mix of surprise and curiosity. "That's a bit weird. What type of pervy ghost haunts the girls' bathroom!?" My voice rose in pitch, a mix of shock and incredulity.
"A-a-and we're done..." Hanako's smile faded as he started floating away toward the stalls.Oh no! I thought, panic washing over me. Yashiro, look what you did! Hurry up and get him back in here!
I scrambled to think of a way to stop him from leaving."W-Wait! I take it back! You can haunt any bathroom you want; I actually think it's quite cool that you're a boy!" My voice carried a note of desperation, hoping it would convince him to stay.
"You... think I'm cool?"
He paused, seemingly surprised, before suddenly popping back into my space with a giant grin, making me stumble back another step. "In that case, what's your name, and what do you wish for?"Well he got over that quickly...
"I am Yashiro Nene! A first-year student in Class A. My wish is for my crush to like me back just as much as I like him!" I proclaimed proudly. Despite how bizarre the situation was, I wasn't about to waste this chance."You want your love to be returned? Hmm, seems easy enough." He placed his hand thoughtfully under his chin, as if contemplating something profound. "And I think I have just the thing! It works wonders." He rummaged through a pocket at his side.
My excitement soared. "Really! Can I see?" I leaned in, eager to see what magic he had up his sleeve.Out of nowhere, Hanako pulled out a massive book, and I felt my enthusiasm deflate.
"Nuh-uh." I instinctively stuck my hand out, refusing to accept it.
"Hear me out!" he exclaimed, desperation creeping into his voice. "To use my powers to do something unnatural to the human heart would require a big price to pay back. So this is the much safer option!" He waved the book in the air, trying to convince me.I didn't want to waste any time. "But what if I don't mind any price?"
"Oh, do you?" Hanako's eyebrows rose in surprise, but then he quickly slid back into his sly grin. "Well, sorry, I don't have that kind of advanced tool."
"What?! This was a mistake..." I groaned internally. But he was a ghost who granted wishes, right? He should have some tricks up his sleeve. Maybe this would still work out.
"Hmmm—" Hanako flipped through the pages of the book, a gleam lighting up his face. "Alright! Let's show you off. What's a talent you have?"I felt a rush of determination surge within me. Whatever it took, I was going to make this wish happen! My face brightens up as an idea pops in my head. excited by the sudden possibility of using my voice to win my crush's heart.
