This is the start of the prologue. These next couple of chapters will be short, but once Somber's story begins they will become longer.

Love/ləv/:an intense feeling of deep affection.

꧁༆꧂

FIFTEEN-YEAR-OLD PRISCILLA HERNANDEZ WAS IN LOVE WITH SEVENTEEN-YEAR-OLD JOHN PRESTON. Not a silly crush that no one knows about. Not some teenage love affair that'll only last a few years, but she was in love. The type of love that makes your heart skip a beat and makes your stomach flutter. The type of love that hypnotizes you into giving whatever he or she wants. This isn't some phase that'll pass. This is real love. John Preston is everything and more than she could ever want. Six-foot-five, gorgeous brown curls that she could push her fingers through for days, a heart-stopping smile, the deepest brown eyes that she could spend hours looking into, and a personality that made hers seem dull. Oh, and tattoos. God those tattoos. She spends most of her nights tracing over them in the dark. He might be the very thing she's always wanted, but he's also the very thing her mother instructed her to stay away from. In her mother Maria's words "he's no good" and "you'll end up pregnant and hopeless", but Priscilla didn't care she thought her mother was bitter and jealous she found someone who loves her. She knew John wouldn't leave her like her father left her mom.

Seventeen-year-old John Preston was in love with fifteen-year-old Priscilla Hernandez. His heart stuttered when she was around, he got tongue-tied whenever she spoke or touched him. He loved everything about her. Standing at five-foot-five, she had the most vibrant red curls he'd ever seen, exactly sixteen freckles adorning her chubby cheeks, big green eyes, and the most beautiful personality that ties it all together. Coming from a home where his parents don't even acknowledge each other these feelings are foreign to him, but he embraces his sunshine and sets her on a pedestal that's impossible to compete with.

John met Priscilla on her first day of high school, enthralled by her beauty he approached the blushing beauty offering her a tour of the school. Priscilla accepted the tour and the two became fast friends and even faster lovers. Many of Priscilla's friends and even the school staff tried to warn her of John, but she didn't care to listen. She lost many friends and even more opportunities to become bigger than their small town. Priscilla has always dreamed of going to an Ivy League college and leaving their small town behind, but once she and John got together she decided she could go to college from home. John had no aspirations, goals, or dreams he just wanted to play high school football, pick up a factory job, and marry his girl. Priscilla going away could ruin those plans which is why he convinced her to stay. (Another reason why Maria hates him).

Love makes you do crazy things, it drives you crazy enough to make brash decisions. It makes you let go of morals that you set for yourself, it makes you question your existence before they came into your life, and it makes you want to abandon every single thing that has nothing to do with them, and every single person that isn't them. Priscilla is willing to let go of her friends, hopes, dreams, plans, and future, she's even willing to let go of her mom for John.

Oh, how she's going to regret that decision.
