Present day

She walked out to her balcony, leaned against the railing, and looked down at the city below. The wind blew against her long, silky white hair as the moon illuminated her skin. She let out a small sigh and looked toward the moon, only to freeze in terror as it seemed to be physically staring back at her with cold eyes. She took a step back and tried to yell, but couldn't finish what she wanted to say.

Suddenly, she fell backward through the flooring and tumbled face-first towards the city below. She saw high skyscrapers warping into weird patterns, faces appearing for split seconds. Then, she hit the cold, hard cement and felt it turn into water as she swam up from the deep end of a pool. Gasping for air, she reached her hand towards the sky, feeling her short, brown, shoulder-length hair. Finally, she found herself lying on a grassy field, wondering, "What the hell is this?"

Before she could contemplate further, she rolled over and found herself face to face with dark black eyes and a white face, seemingly belonging to nobody or anything.

"You'd realize this is only a dream if you were clever," the face said.

Scarlett said nothing.

"If you're ready, touch the button to wake up. If not, he lurks, waiting below your floors and inside your walls. I would press that button."

Confused by the face's words, she looked at the button standing still. Unsure if it was a dream, she hesitated.

"Here goes nothing!" she yelled, pressing the button and waking up gasping. Her short brown hair, with a few black stripes, was stuck to her forehead and neck from the intensity of the dream. She took a deep breath before getting up, slowly rubbing her eyes and looking at the window with the light yellow curtains. She stood up, stretched slowly, and then put on shorts and her dad's shirt, which was a little big for her. She walked towards the window, opened the curtains, and saw a boy walking down the street, talking with what seemed to be his friends.

"Oh? It's Ethan? What's he doing in the neighborhood?" she said to herself. She closed the curtains, got clothes for the day, and took a much-needed, long shower to shake off that dream. After she finally got dressed, she grabbed her phone and headed out. When she got off the last step of the stairs, a car drove crazily into the driveway. Wondering who it was, she ran outside to see her friend Savannah.

"Hey, where did you get that car?" she asked.

Savannah stepped out of the car and gazed at her. Her long blonde hair and blue eyes stood out in her yellow and white tank top and blue shorts. She looked beautiful in Scarlett's eyes.

"Well, I wanted to go to the mall, and before I asked to go, my mom pushed me outside, tossed me the keys, and said, 'Drive safe!' By the way, I'm such a good driver!" she exclaimed. Scarlett walked over to the right side of the car and spoke.

"All right, let's go," Scarlett said.

"Wait, how did you know I was coming?" Savannah asked.

"I didn't. I was going to walk to the store, but hey, the mall's better."

They got into the car, and Savannah drove recklessly to the mall. They were pulled over five times! How was that even possible? She didn't even know. After pulling into a parking spot as close to the mall as possible, they both got out and started walking together inside, talking and laughing the whole way. It was fun, and they arrived inside a couple of minutes after walking.

"Where do you want to go first? There's a new movie out, or we can go shopping for some cool stuffed animals," Savannah said.

Scarlett replied, "Wherever you want to go, I guess?"
