Eyes glued to my phone, I end up tripping over my next step on the first flight of stairs. A body collides against mine. I immediately apologize before looking up at the person. Fuck.
Aarav Papa frowns, fixing his glasses with one hand. "I know you're unemployed, but phone addiction isn't a solution. Get a hobby or two."
I bristle. My feet turn cold. This man used to scare me in childhood. His physique, however, could fool anyone, since he's fitter, better-looking than my father, who is younger by two years. Women are often surprised to find out Aarav Ranawat is fifty-five, the father instead of being the oldest brother. The only secret is some good genes, a healthy diet and a regular workout. Overall, lots of money is spent on maintaining his charm.
"Where were you?"
My body stiffens at that tone he often uses with his sons — I hate it. "Brewed Awakening. To meet Deepika's sister." Before he gets a chance to grill me, I apologize again, hurrying to my room.
Phew.
Unlocking my phone, I stare at Virat's like under my post. Hmmm, is there a post on his account too? Yes, there is. He posted it on our wedding night, albeit it's a different picture. I double-tap to like it. My thumb grazes the caption: New Beginnings.
Maybe I should edit my username. No. He'd get the wrong idea. No. The law doesn't prohibit me from adding his last name after mine. No. It's immoral; he was my sister's husband. No. But that's in the past. No. He might catch my crush on him. No. Changing it is nothing but a formality. No. Deepika will tease me to death. She kept on poking me, inserting those illicit images in my mind till she dropped me home in Kartika's Mercedes.
"What are you blushing at?"
Shivers rush down my spine. The phone flies up from my hands, but I catch it before the screen cracks on the floor. My head whips to the left. To the unlocked door. Then, to the right.
