Beneath the bustling streets of Republic City, an area exists where those displaced by society try to carve out a life. In a modest lot tucked away from the city's noise, eleven-year-old Emi stirs awake to the sound of her mother rustling about. The first light of dawn filters through the cracks in their small home, casting a warm glow over the few belongings they have.
Emi stretches and yawns, rubbing the sleep from her eyes as she spots her mother already dressed and ready for the day. "Mother, are you leaving already?" she asks, her voice thick with sleep.
Her mother glances back with a gentle smile. "Yes, my little flower. I need to look for food. There are still leftovers from yesterday that might be hiding somewhere."
"But Mother, let me help!" Emi insists, swinging her legs over the edge of the makeshift bed. "I can help you look! I’m not a little kid anymore."
Her mother pauses, the warmth of her smile dimming slightly as she kneels beside Emi. "I know you want to help, Emi," she replies softly, brushing a strand of hair behind her daughter's ear. "But you’re still young. Just stay here and play for now, okay? I’ll be back before you know it."
"But I want to help you find food for us," Emi argues, her eyes wide with determination. "I can look in the alleys! I can be careful!"
Her mother’s expression softens, but she shakes her head gently. "It’s dangerous out there, sweetheart. I don’t want you to get hurt. Just promise me you’ll stay inside and play until I return."
Emi sighs, feeling a sense of helplessness wash over her as she watches her mother slip outside. "I’ll be waiting," she murmurs, trying to mask her disappointment.
As her mother disappears into the cool morning air, Emi looks around their tiny home. The light streams in, illuminating the dust motes that dance lazily through the air. It’s a modest existence, but she cherishes these moments, even the quiet ones.
Determined to feel useful, Emi steps outside into the bustling community. She watches other children playing, their laughter ringing through the air like music. A pang of longing tugs at her heart, and she wishes she could join them. Yet the weight of responsibility looms heavily on her shoulders.
After a moment of hesitation, Emi resolves to help her mother from where she is. She takes a deep breath, glancing around at the alleyways nearby. “I can at least gather some scraps,” she mutters to herself.
With a determined nod, she heads toward the street, scanning the ground for anything that might be salvageable. As she searches, she spots an old piece of bread, crusty and stale but still edible. "Look, Mother! I found some old bread!" she exclaims, holding it up triumphantly.
Just then, her mother returns, a mix of exhaustion and relief on her face. "What did you find, Emi?" she asks, her eyes lighting up at the sight of the bread.
"I found this! I knew I could help!" Emi beams, pride swelling in her chest.
Her mother smiles as she holds Emi's face tenderly. "Emi, it's my responsibility as a parent to raise you," she says, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear and wiping the sweat from her brow. "I want to provide a good life for you despite our situation. I want you to play, have fun, and at least eat…"
Emi gazes downward, poking at the ground with her toe, feeling a mix of gratitude and guilt. "But what if I can help more? I want to make sure we have enough," she murmurs, her voice barely above a whisper.
