In the small town of Eldridge, the golden leaves danced down from the trees, blanketing the quiet streets as autumn settled in. The air had that familiar crispness, hinting at Halloween, when mischief was at its peak. Among the tight-knit group of friends, Jenna, Mark, Sara, Tom, Emily, Ben, Lucas, and Mia, plans for pranks had escalated from harmless tricks to shenanigans that felt dangerously thrilling.

One fateful weekend, they devised their most infamous prank yet. Targeting Danny, a shy and awkward classmate who was often the butt of their jokes, they decided to rig a series of fake horror scenarios that would push him to the brink of terror.

Jenna looked at her friends with a gleam in her eyes, “This is going to be epic! Just imagine Danny’s face when he sees the ‘ghost’ in the basement!”

“Are you sure we should do this?” Ben asked, the unease evident in his voice. “What if it goes too far?”

“Come on, Ben!” Emily chimed in, her laughter bubbling. “It’s all in good fun. Besides, it’s Halloween! Let’s make it memorable!”

They gathered on a Friday night, armed with flashlights, fake blood, and a speaker that played eerie sounds. As they crept into the school’s basement—a dimly lit space with cobwebs hanging from its ceiling—Tom whispered, “Remember, we’re just scaring him a little. No harm, okay?”

“Yeah, yeah,” Lucas shrugged, backflipping on their plans. “Just a scare, right?”

After hours of painstakingly setting up their scare—hiding behind corners, placing props, and strategically arranging audio clips—they felt a rush of excitement. Little did they know, the thrill would lead them down a path of no return.

On the night of the dance, everything went according to plan until it didn’t. As Danny entered the basement, the friends triggered their setup. The lights flickered, the sounds blared, and Danny’s scream echoed through the hallway. But in the chaos, Jenna accidentally tripped and fell into a stack of old filing cabinets. The heavy metal case toppled, hitting her head with a sickening thud.

“Jenna?!” Mark yelled, rushing over. "Are you okay?!"

But as the laughter died down, replaced by horrified gasps, they rushed to Jenna, her eyes glazing over, her breath slowing—she was gone in an instant.

“What did we do?!” Sara whispered, her voice quaking with panic.

“Panic! We have to fix this!” Tom shouted, adrenaline coursing through him.

Instead of calling for help or reporting the accident, they decided to bury the incident in a nearby wooded area. They wrapped Jenna’s body in a blanket and dug a shallow grave, swearing to each other they’d keep this secret forever.

“I can’t believe this is happening,” Mia sobbed, hands trembling as she tossed the dirt over Jenna’s resting place. “What if we’re caught?”

The guilt was pressing, but the fear of disclosure outweighed everything else. As the leaves turned from gold to brown, life at Eldridge carried on with deceptive normalcy. Yet, guilt festered deep within the hearts of the eight friends. Their laughter diminished, conversations turned stale, and each wore a mask of forced joviality at school. The seemingly playful bond they had once cherished was replaced by unease.

One year later, whispers filled the halls of Eldridge High, shadows lurking where they once shined brightest. The remaining friends slowly drifted apart, fragmented by the secret they harbored.

Then, one fateful October night, it began—a series of gruesome events that would bring their hidden fears to life.

It all started with Mark, who was supposed to meet Lucas at their usual hangout. When Lucas arrived, he scanned the empty street, his brow furrowing. “Mark? You in there?” When he didn’t get a response, unease squirmed in his gut.
