2020

Jiah opens the door to her high school and makes her way to her locker. This is the last week she'll be able to see Heeseung in the hallways and catch his face every day. Exams are over, and graduation day is drawing closer. She's excited for Heeseung and feels confident about their relationship, but nothing can take away the sadness creeping in as that day approaches.

She looks at her locker and sighs, realizing she needs to grab her stuff and meet Heeseung outside. But she's lost in her feelings. Her heart feels heavy; even though she can't wait for Heeseung to achieve his dream, she can't help but feel bittersweet. Deep in thought, she blankly stares at her closed locker.

"Boo!"

Jiah jolts awake from her daydreaming session.

"Oh my God, Heeseung, you scared the shit out of me!"

He laughs at her, a fond smile spreading across his face as he brushes the strand of hair that fell into her face after the scare.

Meet Lee Heeseung, Jiah's boyfriend of one year and four months. They've been pining for each other ever since they laid eyes on each other two years ago.

They had been inseparable best friends since elementary school; wherever Jiah was, Heeseung was too. They were joined at the hip. But then Heeseung had to move to New York City for his family business, which was opening a new branch. His family wanted to stabilize the branch and be there physically to ensure everything went perfectly. Because of that, they weren't able to see each other for seven years. After that, they kind of forgot about each other—not completely, but they both thought of it as a silly childhood friendship that they were bound to lose contact with.

So when they met again in high school, Heeseung in his third year and Jiah in her first, they felt like strangers. They were children seven years ago; Jiah was 11 and Heeseung was 13. They had changed in every way possible. Yet, when they met again, they immediately recognized each other, and it felt like they had never been apart. Maybe they really were soulmates.

The first eight months of their friendship were spent getting to know each other. Even though they clicked quickly, they still didn't know what had happened during those seven years apart. As they grew closer, they realized there was something more than friendship between them.

Everyone in their school could tell you that Heeseung and Jiah were going to get married—there was just no way they wouldn't. Everyone thought they were the perfect match, and even they themselves believed it.

Their friends, who had a deeper understanding of their relationship, were convinced nothing could ever separate them. Everyone was confident that they would survive not being in the same school. After all, they had done so for seven years, right?

"I'm sorry, Jiah," he laughs, trying to sound apologetic, but the huge grin on his face says otherwise.

"I called for you, but you were so busy staring at your locker that I got concerned."

"I'm sorry, I didn't hear you. I was deep in thought. You know... your graduation is next week, and it's kind of bittersweet. I know we'll be alright, but I'll still miss seeing your ugly face every day."

Heeseung laughs widely.

"Why worry about the future, Jiah? Let's just focus on what we have now. The future us will worry about that then. We know our bond is strong enough to survive anything. We survived seven years, remember?"
