Carolyn's light snores had always been the sweetest of melodies to lull me to sleep

Carolyn's light snores had always been the sweetest of melodies to lull me to sleep. I was one step away from falling into the realm of dreams when the creaking of a door echoed from our living room.

I mumbled that I'd check on it, not that she would have heard me anyway. I envied how deep my wife's sleep was. I debated not taking my wand, but one could never be too careful. Merlin knows what sorts of danger creep in the shadows in this doomed world we wizards live in.

The creaking wooden steps under my feet compromised my stealth as I climbed down the stairs, possibly alerting potential intruders. The grip on my wand got tighter, and though I hadn't used Unforgivable Curses in ages, I was not afraid to revisit the power I once mastered.

I roamed the halls of our home, nothing but the moonlight paving the path to the source of the noise in our living room.

It was silent. Too silent. But one doesn't become a talented curse-breaker, the youngest of his generation, by letting their guard down. My ability to scan my surroundings with utmost precision made Carolyn and her useless 'Revelio' laughable.

Our coat closet was left slightly ajar. I knew my wife too well to just call her organized—she was a neat freak, and except for the door of my office, which didn't close properly after multiple sessions of lovemaking against it, she'd never leave a single cabinet hanging open.

"Lumos," I finally dared to cast. Not because I was scared of anything spooky—I wasn't scared of anything. It just seemed that alerting possible foes could be the best strategy to get over with the situation and go back to bed. "Show yourself!"

One long leg stepped out of the small wardrobe. I immediately recognized the pristine dark green dress trousers and the polished shoes.

Slender, pale fingers curled around the door frame. There was only a single person I knew with that skin tone. Or at least, the only one of their kin who was still alive.

"Ominis?!" I gasped, instinctively pointing my wand in his direction.

Not because I didn't trust Ominis. He had been my best friend for over a decade, and even the best man at my wedding, for Merlin's sake. But as close as we were, one wouldn't invade the other's house in the middle of the night unannounced. Right?

"What was it, Seb?" Carolyn's sleepy voice startled me. "Let's go back to bed."

Rubbing her eyes, the slow shift in her expression gave away the moment her eyes got used to the darkness and spotted the visitor who finally stepped outside the closet.
