Ares was the ancient Greek god of war or, more properly, the spirit of battle. He represented the distasteful aspects of brutal warfare and slaughter. Ares was never very popular, and his worship was not extensive in Greece.

Ares is the Greek god of war. His symbols include the boar, dog, wolf, spear, sword, and vulture. His Roman counterpart is Mars.

His bird was the vulture, and his animal was the dog. Ares is associated with Mars, the god of war in ancient Roman mythology. Ares was the son of Zeus, the chief god, and his wife, Hera. Ares was said to have loved Aphrodite, the goddess of love.

Ares chose to support the Trojans in the Trojan War, thereby betraying a promise he had made to Hera.
Ares had an affair with his brother Hephaestus's wife, Aphrodite.
Ares was not well-loved in Greece, except in Sparta and Thrace.
