Evelina
"Wake up, sweetie," Tony's voice gently roused me from sleep. "Aiden found out that we know he's the mole and is out to get us."
I grunted as I forced myself out of bed. "Get everything ready, including Enzo. I'll freshen up and join you."
After a quick freshen-up and change, I joined Tony and Enzo downstairs. Tony had already sent the rest of the team to the airport, leaving only the three of us.
"I'll take the motorcycle and you guys take the car. Go fast," I instructed as I mounted my motorcycle and sped away. I stopped briefly to see Tony and Enzo pass by, relief washing over me as they did.
I continued trailing behind them until Aiden's men caught up with us. Knowing we had to split up, I went the opposite way. I sped away, only to find Aiden's men and the cops hot on my trail.
"Why me?" I muttered to myself. I just wanted to be safe with Tony. I turned around and shot the wheels of a couple of Aiden's men's cars, then continued driving. The lack of breakfast started to take its toll, and I soon felt drowsy. I turned onto a nearby lane and slowly stopped my bike. By now, most of my tail was gone, with only one cop left. Better than Aiden's men, I guessed.
The cop approached me, and I fainted. The last thing I heard was, "It is a lady." I smirked before everything went silent.
--
I woke up on a cold floor. Where the hell was I? It took a moment to realize I was in jail. So much for happiness.
"Hey, Mr. Cop," I called out, trying to get their attention. A young cop, probably in his twenties, looked in my direction. "What do you want?"
"Just wondering. Did you call my family, and can I have something to eat?"
"Yeah, your brother, Lucian Morrigan, is coming to pick you up. We tried calling your husband but he didn't pick the call and here, have this." He says, handing me a sandwich. Anything will do so I grab it and gulp it down. He hands me a bottle of water, "You must be thirsty too. Go on. Take it." I take the bottle from him and thank him.
Satisfied. I sigh. Lucian's picking me up? Oh, shit. Why the hell? Realization dawned. I had asked Papà and Mama not to adopt me in case it alerted my real parents and caused a Mafia war. But why didn't Tony's call go through? Is he kidnapped?
Just as I calmed my nerves and settled, Lucian walks in. "Where is she?" He asks a policeman.
"The lady in the cell," the policeman replies, pointing at me.
"Get her out. I want to see her properly," Lucian demands, and they obeyed like dogs.
"Evelina Giannino?!" Lucian exclaimed in disbelief as I stand in front of him.
I smiled, totally fake. "Sorry to break our reunion short, but my Papà's ex-right-hand man and a bunch of guys may have my husband and brother-in-law with them, and I can't allow that to happen," I said as I got back on my bike.
"I'm coming with," Lucian stated.
"Alright. But if anything happens, I'm not going to save your butt." I opened my phone and tried to pinpoint Tony's location. I couldn't find it. It only means one thing; he is abducted. I pinpoint Aiden's last known location. Oh my god. This man seriously had issues. He lived in the gutters. Like, for real. He lived in an abandoned sewer.
Well, time to save my family.
---
I crept closer to the entrance where Tony was being held. Two men were trying to extract information from him but failing miserably. Just as I was about to go in, I felt a tug on my shirt.
"What do you want?" I whisper-yelled.
"I'll save him. You stay here," Lucian insisted.
"Don't you think you are eighteen years too late? Also, the man in there is not any normal man. He's my husband. So, no. I'm not staying here. I'm going in to save my family. Also, I am Evelina Giannino, Donna of the Italian Mafia. Don's equal." I said coldly, before walking in to save my husband.
"Sorry to crash your party, but security here is really bad. Did it ever cross your mind that you should change it?"
"Eve!" Tony exclaimed.
"So, she is your weakness?" one of the men with a scar on his nose spoke.
"Excuse me, sir, but I am no one's weakness. Literally, I'm saving his butt, not the other way round." I have a big problem with sexist comments, but like I care. "Addio per sempre," I said as I shot that guy down. "Don't worry. I won't kill you. I think my hubby will need you for finding out where Enzo is, seeing that he is not here." I lunged forward and hit the man unconscious. Knock out. (Goodbye forever)
"I could've handled it myself," Tony said as soon as I freed him.
Instead of snapping at him, I just hugged him. "I don't care."
I sighed. "Alright. We have no time for chit chat. We need to save Enzo's butt." I said as we walked out, dragging the knocked-out man behind us. We were welcomed by a surprised Lucian.
"Eve, did you just kill that man?" Lucian asked.
I nodded. "What's wrong?"
"You're asking me that?"
I ignored him and looked at Tony. "Come on, hubby, we have Enzo to save."
"No," both Tony and Lucian said. Lucian saying it was usual, he doesn't know I am Queen. But why Tony?
"Why?" I asked Tony.
"Because you're pregnant, and I can't have you stressing yourself out."
"I was pregnant when I went to Germany. Alone."
Lucian tried saying something, but Tony cut him off.
"I don't care. I can't have you getting hurt."
"Hai dimenticato chi sono? Non dirmi che pensi davvero che Aiden e qualche stupido uomo possano uccidermi. Andrò, che ti piaccia o no. End of discussion," I shouted. Pregnancy hormones and an overprotective husband don't go well together. (Have you forgotten who I am? Don't tell me you really think Aiden and some stupid men can kill me. I'll go whether you like it or not.)
"Evelina Giannino, ascolta tuo marito e vai all'aeroporto. Salverò Vincenzo io stesso. Please, I don't want to see you hurt." (Evelina Giannino, listen to your husband and go to the airport. I will save Vincenzo myself.)
"I told you, Resto e non c'è niente che possa farmi cambiare idea." (I'm staying and there's nothing that can change my mind.)
Lucian interrupted our fight by suggesting we go to his home to eat and plan before saving Vincenzo. As much as I hated the idea, we were exhausted, and our house was, well, bombed.
"Alright," I say after getting a look of approval from Tony.
As we started driving, Lucian glanced at me. "When we get home, you need to explain why in the world are you pregnant."
I rubbed my forehead in annoyance. "You really don't know when to keep quiet, do you? My brother, as much of a nuisance as he is, has been taken. Sure, he's trained, but he has so much self-respect that he won't see their traps coming, and Aiden knows that."
Lucian looked like he wanted to say something but held himself back. In the uneasy silence, we drove to the American Mafia's mansion.
As we arrived, Lucian calls out, "Dad, I'm home with Eve."
I heard footsteps approaching, but I was too tired to care. Leaning on Tony for support, I watched as my biological father walked in.
"Eve, you've finally found your way back home," he said with a smile that sent a shiver down my spine.
I looked at Tony, tugging on his sleeve. "On second thought, maybe we should've stopped at a café for breakfast and planning."
"Just go with the flow, love," Tony whispered back. "They know you're connected to me, so if we had gone to a café, Aiden and his people wouldn't be the only ones on our tail."
I sighed, trying to push down the anxiety rising in my chest. "Alright, let's get this over with."
