Months had passed since Poppy's worn braces, but she was surprised at how fast she appeared to acclimate to her new routine. At first, the wiry metal seemed awkward and foreign against her teeth as she spent a week trying to navigate the dangers of eating with braces. In no time, brushing her teeth had become a fond habit and a ritual that sealed her commitment to oral hygiene.
Day in and day out, Poppy spent time in the bathroom mirror, meticulously brushing and flossing her teeth. She even bought an orthodontic toothbrush and interdental brushes, determined to get at everything. The extra effort was starting to pay off, and during her last check-up, Dr. Lim commended her on her excellent oral hygiene.
"Keep up the great work, Poppy! Your teeth are responding beautifully to the treatment," she had said, and those words had filled her with pride. With each adjustment appointment, she became one step closer to the smile she wanted and was honored to look forward to it for the rest of her life.
One sunny afternoon, Poppy sat in the school cafeteria with her friends. Soft tacos and fruit were munched on, and stories and jokes were exchanged. Poppy could hardly believe how rocketed her self-esteem was since this orthodontic treatment journey began. She never hid her smile again; she glows with pride, proud of wearing braces and of all the changes made to her smile.
"Hey, Poppy, you're always so happy!" Mia playfully nudged her. "What's the secret?
"Well, I suppose it is just nice to feel good about my smile once," Poppy replied with a broader grin. "Besides, I have been taking care of my teeth."
"Yes, you're always brushing and flossing. I have seen the posts about it," Lucas said, leaning forward, manifestly eager to hear her explain, "So, what's the big deal? Do braces mean that much?"
Poppy drank water and continued, "It's more than braces. You must be very careful with oral hygiene when you have braces. If you don't clean your teeth properly, you can end up with cavities or discoloration after they come off," she explained, her voice full of enthusiasm.
Poppy went on to relate all she learned to her friends, keen on sharing everything she had uncovered from Dr. Lim's lectures and research. "And it's not only about looks, you know; straight teeth help your bite-are you able to chew and speak properly? It boosts one's confidence!"
"I would have never thought of that," Mia said reflectively. "I just assumed it was something about looks."
Poppy nodded, glad to see her friends engaged in the conversation. Poppy smiled, remembering her struggles with her sweet tooth. "It's all about balance. You don't have to give up sweets entirely, but brush afterward or rinse your mouth with water if you indulge. Sticky or hard candies might break brackets."
As they continued lunch, Poppy felt satisfied. She shared her journey and empowered her friends to exercise self-control over maintaining dental health. Poppy beamed as she listened to her friends discuss a topic she had come to love. The more they knew, the more they started seeing oral hygiene as a beautiful power base. Her friends had promised to take much better care of their teeth, and Poppy felt that was excellent.
That night, she couldn't help but smile at her reflection in the mirror. The ugly braces that had previously made her feel self-conscious became a badge of honor, representing her commitment to herself, her health, and the passion she'd recently developed for sharing knowledge with others.
She thanked God for every step of the journey, every visit to the dentist, every brushing and flossing, and every conversation about dental health. Poppy learned that caring for the teeth wasn't just something she did but who she became. As she settled into sleep, she couldn't even wait to see what this journey would lead her to, smile by smile.
