hamzah's pov ༉‧₊˚

"how was the appointment yesterday?" martin asked. his eyes were fixed on the tv in front of him as he intensely tended to his minecraft farm.

i sat back on my bed, staring at my ceiling. "good" i answered plainly. "just good?" martin questioned. "yeah well, things seem to be looking up as far as the treatments go" i shrugged.

truthfully, i wasn't very anxious about the treatments progress or possible lack thereof. i left everything into gods hands or whatever.

i wasn't always this way though.

"that's great news man! we need to celebrate" martin turned to look at me. i cracked a smile. "sure, like what?" i asked turning my head in his direction. "party, asap" martin demanded with an exaggerated expression.

i considered it but there was a small dilemma. "only one problem..." i trailed. martin paused. "we have no friends?" i let out a chuckle. martin scoffed, "i got you, you got me, that's all the friends we need."

"yeah but, i know you'd invite mandy. then i'd be all third wheeling" i told him. martin looked down in guilt, he knew i was right. "hey man, a party is a party" martin said.

i love martin, so i let him have his little moment of celebration. he was truly my biggest support system beside my parents.

before these past few weeks, things were scary. the medication i had been perscribed before triggered an allergic reaction in my system. i was in the hospital for days; and in a coma for two.

i understood the place martin was coming from when he says he wants to celebrate.

"a party it is" i stated.

my next step was just finding people i could invite.

after a while, martin left, and it was just me in my room. out of boredom i walked to the living room to see what my family was up to.

"there's my beautiful son" my mom said from the couch. i smiled, "hey mom." my sister, jena sat on a different couch. "where's dad?" i asked joining my mom.

"working" she answered. "uhh, mom i was wondering, is it okay if i have a party here at the house?" i asked. "a party? you have no friends though..." jena cackled.

i rolled my eyes. "neither do you" i retorted back. jena stuck her tongue out. "a party? was this martins idea?" mom smirked. "uhh, well we both want to throw one..." i told mom.

she paused. "i say yes,  but, ask your dad about it" mom said with a demanding tone at the end.

fair enough. i got up to go back to my room. "wha-- mom! how come hamzah gets to have a party and not me?" i could hear jena whine.

"hamzah is nearly seventeen..." mom stated, causing jena to groan.

it was unspoken awareness that it wasn't because of my maturity or age that mom was leniant with me. it was her soft spot for the fact that i had cancer.

i went back to my room and sat on my bed. i have school tomorrow so i could maybe invite people from my class?

i laid back on the bed. i began wandering about any people to invite. almost subconsciously, my mind circled to that girl i saw at the doctors office.

i shook my head to clear the thought. i'd never seen her before, so what makes me think i'll see her so suddenly again?

my next appointment is tomorrow, so we'll see i guess.

the next morning i woke up for school. i showered real quick and threw some clothes on. "hamzah let's go!" mom shouted from the living room.

i met with my family and we all went to the car. "hamzah, don't forget i'm getting you early for your appointment" mom said. "alright" i answered. "can i come?" jena piped in.

"hmm, sure" mom answered. soon, we got to school. i was already late so i went straight to class, which was ap english lit.

i opened the door, interrupting the teacher mid lecture. "hamzah, lovely of you to join us" ms. sierra said. i nodded in acknowledgment and found my seat.

i sat in the back of the class. my desk was cozy in the very corner of the classroom. "as i was saying, you guys have a poetry assignment, due before spring break" ms. sierra said.

a poetry assignment. interesting. i'm not the poetic type myself but it couldn't hurt to try.

"it's worth 40 percent of your grade. better get started."

i got through the rest of my day easily. i made it to my last period which was athletics. my coaches knew the deal so i usually sat out with martin.

there we sat on the bleachers in the sun. the air was cold, so i wore a grey sweatshirt over my shirt along with navy blue joggers. martin wore gym shorts along with a grey sweatshirt that matched mine.

"did your parents say it was okay?" martin asked. "well, my mom said yeah. i just need to ask my dad" i answered. "fair enough" martin replied. "hamzah! you're going home!" one of our coaches shouted over to me.

"good luck at your appointment man" martin said. "thanks bro" i replied. i left to grab my backpack and went to meet my mom in front of school.

from there, we went to the doctors office. my appointment was a breeze and the doctors said everything has been well.

once we left the office, i noticed that girl was here again. "hamzah? you coming?" jena asked me, right behind mom. i hadn't realized on the way out that i stopped in my tracks.

"uh, yeah, be right there" i answered. the girl sat in same spot as before but was alone this time. she was on her phone and glanced up at me. here goes nothing.

"h-hi, i'm hamzah" i said as i approached the girl. stutter why don't you hamzah, fuck.

she put her phone down giving me her attention. "i'm valerie" the girl said.

"uhh-- well, i'm having a party soon, did you want to come maybe? it's okay if not" i felt myself began to ramble.

valerie's lips curled into a smile. "yeah, i'm down" she said. "okay, well, i'll just get your number then" i said pulling out my phone.

we exchanged numbers. i let out a sigh of relief as i left.

success.

"was that your girlfriend or something?" jena asked as she turned around to look at the girl.

"jena shut up"
