The autumn leaves crunched under every step I took, creating a beautiful symphony as we headed into the cold and brooding winter. The tingling sensation of the cold wind against my warm skin and the sudden sharpness in the air, they all disappeared as soon as I entered my apartment building.

I headed towards my apartment and took the extra key from underneath the dying plant pot and unlocked my apartment.

My apartment was dimly lit from the one lamp that I always left on. It's the only thing that would make me feel at peace in this lonely apartment.

I took a shower and changed into my lacy underwear for the night and headed over to my cozy bed for a good night sleep.

Awww, I love my bed.

My hand moved towards the table lamp in order to turn it off when suddenly my eyes fell on a small note tucked beneath the stand of the lamp.

I don't remember putting something here...

Curiously I took the note from under the lamp and unfolded it.

"Tick-Tick 10"

My eyes brimmed with tears as my lips wobble at the thought of him coming back.

It can't be. This has to be some kind of a sick joke.

That sick psycho had taken everything away from me, what more does he want and after all these years.

My heart beat increased at the idea of him knowing where I was, I had run away from him before, I can do that again if I had to.

I took deep breaths to control my hyperventilation as my entire body shook as if it was no longer under my control.

Maybe I should call the police, I could be someone else...

Without any other thought, I picked up the phone as dialled the number.

"Hello, 911. Whats your emergency?", a lady from the other side responded.

Controlling my breath, I finally uttered, "I feel like someone is stalking me, I found a note in my apartment and I don't know how it got here. I don't feel s-safe"

"Can I please have your name and address please?"

"D-Dove Warren. I live at 88 A-Albert Street"

"Ok, miss calm down, We are dispatching someone right now. Please stay where you are. It maybe dangerous to go outside."

"O-ok", i replied as my voice trembled. I may or may not be experiencing a panic attack, it felt like the walls were closing on me and I couldn't move.

Within a few minutes the police had arrived and checked the premises.

"Miss Warren, we have inspected the premises and there are no signs of intrusion. Are you sure that no one else has the keys to your apartment?", the cop asked. He was around 6"3 with a muscular build.

"No, i have never given my apartment keys to anyone.", i looked at my feet, trying to hide my blush that had creeped up my cheeks.

What is wrong with me! I was just in a life and death situation. I cannot be finding anyone attractive in this situation!!

"I recommend that you get your locks changed first thing in the morning. It could be the work of someone close to you, so stay vigilant and inform us if you find anything as soon as possible.", he explained as he headed towards the door. With a soft click of the lock, he was out of my apartment.

His words had seemed to calm me down. But I still could not fall asleep that night.

Maybe he was right, I could be someone pranking me...

I wanted myself to believe it but something in my gut pointed it otherwise.

Finally, I drifted off to the little sleep I could get and had someone change the locks to my apartment first thing in the morning.

Today, I was meeting up with Elena, she has been my best friend since I started university. She was a kind person, who often helped out at animal shelters and advocated for saving animals from harmful practices.

"Sooo, i have something to tell you...", i started as we flipped through the textbook pages.

"Oooo, I am all ears"

I told Elena everything about last night, her jaw kept on dropping more and more as we progressed through the story.

"Girlll, So you are telling me that you might have a stalker???" , she continued  "Do you think he is like the one in the books? Or....", her sentence drifted as he smacked herself on the head and said, "Ugh!! How can I be so stupid, of course he is going to be the scary kind. Please be careful and call me if you need any help"

I laughed at her instincts, she was a hopeless romantic and reading all those books did not help either.

We both giggled and gossiped until it was time for us to go home. We both said our goodbyes and headed home.

Being too tired to cook, I decided to order takeout when I reached my apartment. I took a long shower and put on some relaxing clothes. I was about to head out to the living area, when my eyes fell on something tucked under the lamp stand.

A note.
