The summer days rolled on, bringing with them a mix of laughter, shared memories, and an undercurrent of tension between Amelia and Josh. It was as if the air around them had thickened with unspoken words, their easy banter morphing into something more profound yet confusing.
As the week progressed, Amelia found herself wrapped in a cocoon of thoughts about Josh—his laughter, the way his eyes sparkled when he teased her, and the way her heart raced when he lingered just a little too close. She didn't want to think too much about it; she didn't want to make everything complicated. But every time she saw him, she felt that familiar flutter in her stomach.
It was a bright Saturday morning when the air felt particularly charged. Christopher had gone out for a run, leaving Amelia and Josh at home. They had both agreed to keep things casual, but the tension from their last outing still hung heavy.
Amelia was in the kitchen, trying to muster the motivation to make breakfast when Josh wandered in, stretching his arms above his head and yawning dramatically.
"Good morning, sunshine!" he called out, plopping down at the kitchen table with a grin that made her heart skip a beat.
"Morning!" Amelia replied, forcing herself to sound cheerful despite the nervousness that bubbled inside her.
"What's on the breakfast menu?" he asked, leaning back in his chair and propping his feet up on the table.
Amelia shot him a playful glare. "You're not going to put your feet on the table, are you?"
"Why not? It's my table too," he shot back, a teasing glint in his eyes.
"Yeah, well, I just cleaned it," she replied, trying to suppress a smile.
"Good. Makes me feel better about putting my feet up." Josh grinned, and she couldn't help but roll her eyes.
As she scrambled some eggs, Amelia felt Josh's gaze on her, and she tried her best to ignore it. But it was impossible, especially when he spoke up again, his tone casual but the words loaded.
"You know, I always thought you looked cute in that apron," he said, his voice light but his eyes betraying something deeper.
"Cute? Really?" Amelia asked, pretending to be incredulous. "I thought I looked like a dork."
"Dorks are in now," he replied, a smirk on his face. "Besides, it's not the apron that makes you cute. It's you."
Her cheeks flushed at his words, a mix of embarrassment and excitement swirling within her. "Okay, Josh, stop flirting!" she exclaimed, trying to sound authoritative but failing miserably.
"Flirting? I'm just stating facts," he said, leaning forward with his chin resting on his hand, watching her with an intensity that made her heart race.
"Facts, huh? Well, maybe you should stick to facts that don't involve me looking cute," she said, feeling bold.
"Never! You're way too cute to ignore." He winked at her, and her stomach flipped.
Just then, her phone buzzed, breaking the moment. It was a text from Christopher: "I'll be back soon. Save me some breakfast!"
Amelia quickly glanced at Josh, her heart still pounding. "Well, looks like you'll have to keep your feet off the table for now. Breakfast is almost done."
Josh chuckled, stretching his arms again as if to tease her further. "Only if you promise to save me some of that dorky cuteness."
Christopher returned shortly after, his presence instantly changing the atmosphere in the kitchen. "Smells amazing!" he said, grinning as he entered. "What did I miss?"
