However, despite saving her, Tomoe couldn't win Haruhi's heart. She was engaged to another man, much like Yukiji had been in the past. Reluctant to interfere, Tomoe chose to protect Haruhi from afar, unwilling to let her meet the same end as Yukiji.

Sakura arrived at the very place where Tomoe had once saved Haruhi from the curse. As the final test of her journey, Haruhi appeared before her.

Haruhi: "I was expecting you, Sakura."

Sakura: "I have a question for you."

Haruhi: "You may ask."

Sakura: "Why didn't you stop the engagement and marry Tomoe back then?"
