CHAPTER 4
Today's class starts as a blissful free period because Mrs. Brown mysteriously decides to take the day off. The room erupts into its usual chaos, with everyone diving into their version of "productive" activities; if you consider non-stop chattering productive, that is.
My friends are in their usual rhythm, talking endlessly about... something. I'm not paying much attention. I'm too focused on not getting involved, though it's hard to ignore them when they're practically shouting.
Ryan, always enthusiastic, buzzes with excitement over the news that our section is merging with another due to construction on the other side of the school. "This is the best thing that could ever happen!" he exclaims, his enthusiasm bordering on manic. He acts like the construction on the other side of the school is an unexpected vacation.
Jake, on the other hand, is lost in daydreams about all the new faces joining our classes. I can practically see the hearts in his eyes.
"Dude, we're here to learn," I want to say, but let's be real; who am I kidding? Half the class probably has the same thoughts as Jake, just less obvious about it.
As the bell rings, snapping us out of our blissful freedom, we transition into our science class. Mr. Conel strolls in, wearing that usual serious expression of his. I brace myself. His assignments always feel like an impossible task.
"Alright, everyone, listen up!" he announces, tapping the board with his marker. "We're kicking off our science project today, and I'll be assigning partners." Cue the groans from those who hoped to pick their own. "This is not up for negotiation," he adds, instantly silencing the complaints.
As he begins reading off the pairs, the tension in the room is palpable. Jake mutters under his breath, clearly hoping for a lucky match. And then, I hear the words that send a chill down my spine.
"Daniel, you'll be working with Clara."
My friends explode with excitement. Jake elbows me with a grin. "Dude, you lucky dog! Clara? You're set!"
I roll my eyes. "It's just a project, Jake, not a date." It's not like we're going to be planning a romantic dinner over a Bunsen burner.
Ryan isn't helping either. "Oh, come on, Daniel. You've got to admit, this is a win."
I shake my head. "I'd rather just get the project done."
Meanwhile, Mr. Conel continues with his list. "Isabel, you'll be with Jake."
I stifle a laugh. Isabel looks like she's been sentenced to detention, while Jake's enthusiasm instantly deflates. "Great," he mutters. "Now I actually have to work."
I grin. "Isabella won't let you slack off, man. She's serious about her grades."
Jake sighs. "Yeah, but still... Clara. You've got it easy."
Easy? More like awkward. But I keep that to myself. Clara gives me a polite smile when we're introduced, while my friends act like I've won the lottery. Meanwhile, Jake is clearly in for an interesting ride with Isabel.
Later, chaos reigns again as our class shifts to the Auditorium building. It feels like the entire school is on the move, with students lugging their bags and books to our new destination.
As I head toward the Auditorium, I spot a cluster of students near the lockers. Lucas is in the middle of it, chatting with Isabel.
What is he doing talking to her? Sure, our classes have merged, but it seems suspicious. Lucas is all charm and no substance, and Isabel deserves better. But hey, it's not my problem. It's not like I'm her guardian or anything.
