The next morning. We were all sitting down. Mustang and I were behind Mav and Goose, like always. Pete looked back at me and winked. I giggled softly and smiled at him. Jester was talking. "You're smiling more, did you finally tell him?" My RIO whispered to me, I nodded my head, smiling. "About time." He chuckled quietly. "You'll be trained and evaluated by civilian specialists. They're our best source of information on enemy aircraft. Charlie Blackwood. Listen to her. Alright, we have a hop to take, move it!" He said. We all got up, Mav walked beside me, wrapped his arm around me, "See you up there, okay?" He nodded to the sky and kissed my head. "May the best pilot win, Mitchell." I winked at him. "Oh, so that's how we're doing this? Competition, sweetheart?" He asked, butterflies filled my stomach at him calling me that. "Yep, that's what we're doing, Maverick." I kissed his cheek and walked to my jet. He chuckled and shook his head. "Alright, come on, Mav." Goose laughed. We were in our jets, suddenly a voice came through, "This is your first hop. The jets you're flying against are smaller and faster, just like the enemy MiG's. And as of now, we are keeping score." Jester told us. "Mustang, you see him?" I asked. "Bring it right." I did as he said, we got Jester. Mav and Goose were working on their way to get him. "I lost him, Goose." Mav said. "He's on our tail, coming hard." Goose said. "I got him. Here we go. Talk to me, Goose." Maverick said. "He's closing in on us." Goose told him. "Alright, Jester, I'll give you a run for your money here." "Watch the mountains! He's still back there." "I'll hit the brakes, he'll fly right by." Maverick said. "Let's turn and burn. He's going for the hard-deck." Goose said. "No way, Jester, you're mine. I've got you now." They got Jester, too. "Jester's dead." Mav said. "Jester's dead. Yee-haw. Great balls of fire!" Goose said.
"Get your butts above the hard-deck and return to base immediately." Jester said. "Yes, sir!" Mav told him. "This is Ghost Rider requesting a flyby." Maverick said. I shook my head. "Negative, Ghost Rider. The pattern is full." "No, Mav, this is not a good idea." "Sorry, Goose, but it's time to buzz the tower." Maverick did a flyby. I laughed. I was walking in the building when Maverick came up behind me, "Nice job out there, baby." He told me quietly. "You too, babe. And that flyby, will you ever learn your lesson?" I chuckled. "Nope, probably not. But you know you love it. So don't pretend you don't." He whispered in ear. "You got me on that, I do love it." I smiled. He kissed my cheek. We went to the locker room, I went to my room to freshen up. Meanwhile, in the locker room with the boys. "You got Jester?" "Didn't everybody?" "No, we got our butts kicked. I said to Hollywood, where'd he go? He said, where'd you go?" Wolfman said. "And he's laughing at us on the radio." Hollywood said. "That was me. We won." Slider said. "Alright!" "They won too, man." "That's not what I heard." "We got Jester." "Below the hard deck doesn't count." "You guys really are cowboys." Iceman said.
"What's your problem, Kazansky?" Maverick asked. "You're everyone's problem. Because every time you fly, you're unsafe. I don't like you cause you're dangerous." Iceman told him. "That's right, Iceman. I am dangerous." Mav said. "Maverick, you and Goose get your butts out of that flight gear and up to Viper's office. Now." Jester said. I was walking by Viper in the hallway, "Midnight, how's it going?" He asked me. "Good, sir." I said. "Good to hear. I know you and Maverick are alike when it comes to you two up in the sky, so be careful. I know about your flybys, too." He looked at me. "Yes, sir." I nodded. He smiled and nodded back. I turned back in the direction I was walking and saw Maverick and Goose. Mav smiled at me, "See you later, right, baby?" He whispered to me. "Absolutely." I smiled. They continued their walk to Viper's office. They were outside the door. Someone was yelling about the flyby, he walked out. "That'll just about cover the flybys." Viper said. "Follow me." Jester told them. "Gentlemen, quite a first day you've had. You knew what the hard deck was for this hop. You knew it and you broke it. You followed Commander Heatherly below after he lost sight of you. Why?" Viper asked. "Sir, I had him in my sights. He saw me move in for the kill, he proceeded below the hard deck. I had the shot. There was no danger, so I took it." Maverick said. "You took it and broke a major rule of engagement. And you broke another one with that circus stunt flyby. Lieutenant Mitchell, Top Gun rules of engagement exist for your safety and for that of your team. They're not flexible, nor am I. Either obey them or you're history. Is that clear?" Viper told him. "Yes, sir!" Mav said. "Dismissed." Viper told them. They walked out. "I really enjoyed that, Mav. Thanks a lot." Goose sighed.
I was in my room when I walked out and saw Goose about to go in Mav's room. "Hey, Goose!" I said. "Oh, hey. What's up?" Goose asked. "Nothing. I was just coming to see Mav." I smiled. "You know I'm really glad that you guys finally admitted your feelings towards each other, it took you long enough." He chuckled. I laughed. "I am, too. It's been great." "Well, you wanna come in with me?" He asked. "Yeah, sure." I said. We walked in. "Still awake?" Goose asked. "Yeah." Mav said. Then he looked at me and smiled. "Hey there, sweetheart." "Hey, baby." I said as I sat down on the couch beside him, Goose sat on a chair. "What's up?" Mav asked him. "I can't sleep. When I realized we were off to Top Gun, all I could think about was getting that trophy. I've gotta be straight with you, Mav. Right now, I just hope we graduate. I got a family to think about. I can't afford to blow this." Goose told him. "Yeah, I guess that flyby wasn't such a big hit, huh?" He said. "I know it's tough. The Academy rejected you because you're Duke Mitchell's kid. You have to live with that reputation, but it's like you're flying against a ghost, it makes me nervous." Goose said. "You're the only family I've got. I'm not gonna let you down, I promise." Mav told him. I smiled softly at that. Goose smiled and got up. "Get out of here." Mav smiled slightly.
It was now just me and him. I scooted closer and curled up to him, he wrapped his arm around me and kissed my head. "I'm not gonna let my girl down, either." He said softly. I looked up at him, "Mav, you could never let me down, that's a promise." I leaned up and kissed him. He pulled me into his lap, I wrapped my arms around his neck as he wrapped his around my waist. He kissed me and rested his forehead to mine. "You sure about that baby?" He chuckled. "Yes, I'm sure baby. You never have for as long as I've known you." I smiled. "We have known each other for quite some time, haven't we? It took us long enough to get together." He said. "We have. I know. I guess a part of me didn't wanna mess up what we had, but I couldn't hold it in anymore." I said. "You could never mess it up. It's only getting better. I love you." He cupped my face. "I love you, too." I slid my fingers through his hair. He kissed me, I kissed him back. "I've always wanted you." He told me. "I've always wanted you, too, Mav." I leaned down and kissed his chest. I put my face in the crook of his neck and cuddled closer to him. He held me tightly. We then decided to lay in his bed and sleep.
