Chapter 6: The Price of Power
The group made their way back through the cold, winding passageways of the academy’s underground, the weight of the artifact resting heavily in their minds. Aria couldn’t shake the strange sense of unease that had taken root ever since they retrieved the orb. Even with the threat of the spectral guardians gone, it felt like something darker was lurking beneath the surface.
As they emerged into the library, Professor Everly set the orb on a table and carefully closed the door behind them. The light of dawn began to filter through the tall windows, casting a warm glow on the shelves lined with ancient tomes. Yet the atmosphere in the room remained tense.
“We need to secure the artifact immediately,” Professor Everly said, her voice firm. “This kind of power is not meant to be handled carelessly. I will take it to the Headmaster for safekeeping.”
Aria and her friends exchanged uneasy glances. “Should we let the Headmaster know about what we’ve uncovered?” Marcus asked. “He may already know about the artifact, but it seems like there’s more to this than we realize.”
Lila nodded in agreement. “What if the disturbances aren’t just because of the artifact? The scrolls we found mention other threats—forces that might be trying to use the artifact for their own gain.”
Professor Everly paused, considering their words. “It’s possible. But for now, securing the artifact is our priority. I’ll speak with the Headmaster personally. You three should focus on your studies and keep this matter discreet.”
Aria bit her lip, uncertainty gnawing at her. She had a sinking feeling that this situation was far from over, and simply hiding the artifact away wouldn’t be enough to stop whatever was coming.
“Understood,” Aria said, though her voice lacked conviction. As Professor Everly carefully wrapped the orb in protective wards and left the library, Aria turned to her friends. “We need to keep investigating. Something tells me the artifact is just the beginning.”
Marcus nodded. “Agreed. The texts we found mentioned more than just one artifact—there could be others. And if someone knows about them, they might already be searching.”
Lila frowned, glancing at the door where Professor Everly had just left. “Do you think we can trust the Headmaster with this? What if he’s already aware of what’s going on and hasn’t told us?”
“We don’t have enough information yet,” Aria said thoughtfully. “But I don’t think we can sit back and wait for answers. Let’s start by digging deeper into the academy’s history—there’s more here than meets the eye.”
The trio spent the next few days pouring over the library’s restricted texts, piecing together fragments of history that pointed to a series of magical artifacts hidden throughout Celestia Academy. These artifacts were created by the academy’s founders centuries ago, meant to amplify magical abilities but were sealed away due to the immense dangers they posed.
One text stood out to Aria in particular. It mentioned the Eclipse Circle, an ancient group of rogue mages who sought to control the magical world through the artifacts. The founders of Celestia Academy had defeated them in a legendary battle, but there were whispers that the Circle had never truly been destroyed.
“If the Eclipse Circle is still active, they could be behind the disturbances,” Marcus said grimly. “And they’ll stop at nothing to get their hands on the artifacts.”
Lila frowned, deep in thought. “That would explain the recent anomalies—magical disruptions that seem too organized to be natural.”
Aria felt a chill run down her spine. “If they’re already moving, we don’t have much time. We need to figure out where the other artifacts are before they do.”
Just as they were formulating their next steps, a loud knock echoed through the library. The trio tensed as the door swung open, revealing a tall figure standing in the doorway. It was Cedric Valemont, one of the academy’s senior students and a notoriously powerful sorcerer. His sharp blue eyes scanned the room before settling on Aria.
“I hear you’ve been doing some... interesting research,” Cedric said with a knowing smile. His presence was intimidating, his aura practically crackling with magical energy. “Care to share what you’ve discovered?”
Aria felt her heart skip a beat. Cedric had always been somewhat of a mystery, but his sudden appearance now, and the implication that he knew about their investigation, set her on edge. She exchanged a glance with Marcus and Lila, who both seemed equally uneasy.
“We’re just studying some old texts,” Aria said cautiously, not revealing too much. “What brings you here?”
Cedric raised an eyebrow. “Don’t play coy with me, Aria. You’ve been poking around things that are better left untouched. The academy has its secrets, and trust me—some secrets come with a price. I suggest you stop while you still can.”
With that, Cedric turned on his heel and left, his warning hanging in the air like a dark cloud.
As soon as he was gone, Aria clenched her fists. “He knows something. And if he’s involved in this... we need to be even more careful.”
Lila’s eyes were wide with worry. “What do we do now?”
Aria’s voice was steady, though her mind was racing. “We keep going. We’re closer than we think. But now, we’re not just up against the guardians or the academy’s secrets—we’re dealing with something much bigger.”
The storm was coming, and Aria knew they couldn’t turn back now. The next step was clear: find the remaining artifacts before the Eclipse Circle—or Cedric—could claim them.
