As the festivities of the wedding banquet drew to a close, Adelaide found herself standing in a quieter corner of the grand hall, the evening's excitement still buzzing around her. She had shared laughs with her friends, danced with unfamiliar faces, and endured countless well-wishes from nobles whose names she would struggle to remember. But now, as the crowd began to thin, her thoughts turned toward the next chapter of her life—the one she would share with Prince Lucian.
Lucian approached her, his expression softened, no longer the guarded, calculating prince but something more vulnerable. "Lady Adelaide," he said, his voice lower, more personal than before, "may I escort you to our chambers?"
She met his eyes, searching for a glimpse of sincerity, and gave a small nod. "Of course, Your Highness," she replied, allowing him to take her arm. His touch was light, almost tentative, as if he, too, was feeling the uncertainty of this new union.
They walked in silence through the dimly lit corridors of the castle, their footsteps echoing on the stone floors. As they reached the entrance to their shared chambers, Adelaide's heart beat faster, a mix of anticipation and nerves. The room was grand but surprisingly intimate, with rich tapestries on the walls and a large bed draped in silk linens. A small fire crackled in the hearth, casting a warm glow that softened the edges of the room.
Lucian released her arm and turned to face her, a faint smile tugging at the corner of his lips. "It seems strange, doesn't it?" he said, almost as if he were confiding in her. "To be strangers and yet... not. To be bound by duty yet not know the person standing before us."
Adelaide felt a small flicker of relief that he, too, acknowledged the awkwardness. "Yes," she said, a touch of honesty in her voice. "It feels as though we are playing roles written for us long before we knew each other. I hardly know what to expect."
Lucian's smile deepened slightly, though his eyes held a hint of something she couldn't quite place—sadness, perhaps? Or resignation? "Well, perhaps we can start by simply being ourselves, at least in this room. No titles, no courtly manners—just Lucian and Adelaide."
"Lucian," she repeated, tasting the familiarity of his name on her tongue. "It will take some getting used to."
He nodded, moving to stand by the fire, his gaze fixed on the dancing flames. "I admit, I didn't know what to expect from this marriage either. But I hope that, in time, we might find a way to make this partnership more than just a political alliance."
Adelaide's chest tightened at his words. She had prepared herself for a life of duty, of fulfilling obligations to her family and the crown, but she hadn't dared to hope for more than that. "Do you really believe we could?" she asked, almost in a whisper.
Lucian turned to her then, his eyes earnest, a softness in them that made her pulse quicken. "I think," he said slowly, "that if we give each other a chance, we might discover that there is more to both of us than the roles we play in the court."
A quiet pause settled between them, filled with unspoken possibilities. Adelaide looked into his eyes and saw not just a prince, but a man who was as unsure as she was, a man who wanted something more than a mere contract of marriage.
He reached out, taking her hand in his, his touch warm and gentle. "Shall we try to find some common ground, then? Even if it's just for tonight."
Adelaide squeezed his hand lightly, a small, tentative smile forming on her lips. "I would like that," she said softly.
The evening wore on, and they spoke of simpler things—of their childhoods, their favorite places in the castle grounds, and the books they had read. They discovered a shared love for stories of distant lands and a mutual disdain for the pomp of court politics. Lucian's laugh, when it came, was genuine and surprisingly light, and Adelaide found herself relaxing, the stiffness of her posture melting away.
