"I didn't kill Kelly Owens."
"I did not kill Kelly Owens."
"Officer I promise you, I didn't lay a hand on her."
"I didn't even know who she was until she died."
"I want to speak to my lawyer."
"I assure you, officer, that I had no physical contact with the girl. Now if you just let me and my friends go, this situation could be handled in a jiff."
At the police station, the flickering lights buzzed softly above as Auburella, Miles, and Dina sat across from Yuto, Grey, and Sage. No one spoke at first; the thoughts of having to do juvie sat in their minds.
Auburella's eyes were puffy, her hands clenched in her lap, while Miles sat stiffly, glancing from person to person, trying to read the room. Dina, as calm as ever, tapped her fingers nervously on the table, breaking the silence.
"You guys okay?" Dina asked, her voice soft but carrying across the small, cold room. Her gaze was focused on Sage, who looked annoyed and pissed. Yuto was quiet, his usual confident face buried under a layer of frustration. Grey, on the other hand, looked furious, arms crossed and glaring at nothing in particular.
"I'm going to jail." Miles said as he started blankly to the floor.
"Don't say that... come on guys, we didn't do anything wrong? Right?"
She looked around the room, hoping someone would agree—that someone wouldn't lie right to her face. Sage sat quietly, looked at Grey, and Grey looked at Miles. Yuto looked at Grey, and at this point it became a staring game as to who would fold first.
"Right?" Dina asked again, her voice softer now, almost pleading.
Miles scratched his neck and lumped back into the chair; in his mind, he was debating whether to tell the truth or keep it hush. Two things would go wrong if he said what actually happened behind the school. He couldn't risk it; if the police found out before his friends did, his obsession with graduating would go down the drain.
One Grey would beat his ass.
Two Grey would still beat his ass.
"Kelly wasn't actually dead; she was alive when Grey, Sage, and I found her." Miles blurted.
The room went silent. Dina, Auburella, and Yuto stared at him, stunned. Sage's eyes widened, her hands freezing mid-fidget at the mention of her name.
"Dude, what the hell—?" Sage shot up from her seat.
"What?" Auburella looked at Miles, just as confused as everyone else.
Miles swallowed hard, unable to look at them. "I mean, she wasn't... she wasn't dead yet when we found her. She was barely conscious. Breathing, but barely. The minute we touched her, she passed out, and thats when she actually died."
The silence that followed felt suffocating.
Dina shook her head slowly, disbelief washing over her. "Miles, that's... how could you not say something before?"
Sage's hands trembled as she spoke, her voice cracking. "We panicked, okay?" Her head turned to Grey.
"Grey told us first; his saw the body first."
Grey's face twisted with disbelief as he turned sharply to Sage. "What the hell, Sage?" he snapped, his voice laced with frustration. His eyes were wild, darting between her and the others as if he couldn't believe what he had just heard.
Sage froze, clearly shaken by his reaction. "Grey, we have to tell the truth," she pleaded softly, her voice cracking under the weight of everything. "We can't keep this secret anymore."
