The sun was high in the sky, casting long shadows across the familiar street where Sofia had spent her whole life. It was a quiet neighborhood, with perfectly lined houses and manicured lawns. Nothing ever seemed to change—until today.
From her bedroom window, Sofia watched the commotion next door as a moving truck pulled up to the house. She leaned against the windowsill, squinting to get a better view of the new neighbors. A family was unloading boxes, and she could hear muffled voices and laughter.
Among them was someone she hadn't seen before—a boy about her age. His hair was tousled and dark, falling effortlessly over his eyes as he helped lift a heavy box out of the truck. Every time he turned his head, the light would catch the faintest smile on his face. His laughter reached her window, light and carefree, making her wonder what was so amusing about moving furniture.
Sofia's curiosity piqued as she watched him. Who is he? she thought to herself, feeling something stir inside her chest. He didn't look like the kind of person who would blend into the background of this quiet street. He seemed... different, exciting even. She hadn't met anyone new in a long time—especially not someone her age.
With a sigh, she turned away from the window and flopped onto her bed, staring up at the ceiling. New neighbors, she thought. It was strange to think about. That house had been empty for months, and now it was suddenly full of life.
Just as Sofia was lost in thought, her phone buzzed. It was a message from her best friend, Mia.
Mia: "Hey! Did you see the new neighbors yet?"
Sofia smirked and quickly replied.
Sofia: "Yeah, just now. There's a boy, our age. He's cute."
Mia: "Oooo, really? You have to introduce yourself!"
Sofia chuckled, rolling her eyes. Mia was always the one pushing her out of her comfort zone. She wasn't the kind of person who just walked up to someone new and introduced herself.
Sofia: "Yeah, right. Maybe later."
Mia sent back a winking emoji, and Sofia tossed her phone aside. She couldn't deny that she was curious. She kept wondering about that boy—where he came from, what his story was, and if he was as carefree and charming as he seemed from her window.
The day slipped by, and by evening, the air was cooler, with a soft breeze drifting through her open window. Sofia decided to take Charlie, her golden retriever, for a walk like she always did after dinner.
As they rounded the corner of her front yard, Charlie tugged on the leash, eager to explore. But before they could head toward the park, Sofia's heart skipped a beat. There he was—the boy—sitting on the front steps of his new house, strumming a guitar. The sound was slow and soothing, filling the warm summer air with a melody she couldn't quite place.
Charlie, always full of energy, tugged the leash hard, pulling Sofia toward him.
"Charlie, wait!" she whispered, trying to rein him in. But it was no use. The dog was determined, and within seconds, they were standing right in front of the boy.
He looked up from his guitar, a surprised but amused expression crossing his face.
"Hey," he said, his voice smooth and light, as if they were already friends. "Looks like your dog wants to say hi."
Sofia blushed, tugging at Charlie's leash. "Yeah, sorry about that. He's... overly friendly sometimes."
The boy laughed, setting his guitar aside as he crouched down to pet Charlie. "That's okay. I like friendly. I'm Jake, by the way. We just moved in."
Sofia smiled nervously. "I'm Sofia. I live next door."
"Well, Sofia-next-door," Jake said with a grin, looking up at her through his messy hair. "It's nice to meet you."
There was something about the way he said it—something easy and comfortable, like they had known each other for longer than a few moments. Sofia found herself relaxing, the initial nervousness fading.
"Nice to meet you too," she replied, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. "Welcome to the neighborhood."
Jake stood up, his gaze lingering on her for a second longer than she expected. "Thanks. I wasn't sure how I'd feel about moving here, but I think I'm going to like it."
Sofia's heart fluttered at his words, though she wasn't sure why. There was something about him—something that made her feel like this summer might be different after all.
