~CHAPTER ONE~

"Welcome to year 10!" Mrs. Alder announces, a warm smile on her face. "Stand at the back of the classroom and wait to be sat in your assigned seats."
The class do as instructed, leaning on walls and tables, dead silent, listening.
Mrs. Alder rattles off the students' names, pointing at their seats, "Alfie, you here. Ruby, you here,"
She rattles off names until she gets to the last two: Josh- dainty in frame and tall in stature, an enjoyer of ice skating- and Oscar- shorter than Josh, yet not quite as delicate, and an enjoyer of... not much...
Josh looks at oscar, brown eyes widening just slightly and brows furrowing.
"Him?" He mutters under his breath, not at all pleased to be sat with Oscar, of all people. Seriously! Oscar!?
Oscar doesn't look too pleased with the arrangement either, lip curled up in disgust. He mutters something, but Josh is unable to make out whatever it was he said.

Oscar is first to sit down, next to the window, he takes out his supplies from his bag- his pencil case, planner, bottle, whatever he needs. Josh follows, watching him- observing him- from his seat, he's hated that boy since...
Oscar glares back, lip still curled up in a slight grimace, "What are you looking at?" He scorns, as if Josh was some scum of the earth, low life! (Which he would say he is not!)
"Oh, nothing."
"Oh, really? You're sure?" Oscar quips, thinking he was just so smart for that one.
"Positive. I mean- who would want to look at a face like that?"
Oscar scoffs, turning to look at his book, front detail lines still blank. He scribbles down his name, class, and year. Set one maths, year 10. Josh scribbles his own name, the class, and the year.

The lesson wasn't all that interesting. Ratios, percentage increase, taxes? Boring.

But, alas, it is break time. Josh goes to stand in the line in the canteen hall, currently void of chairs. He had it dodge an absurd amount of year 7s rushing to their lessons to get there, but he made it. He looks at his 'Free break time snack, bring a friend' card and sighs heavily. His other friends went off with their friends, their better friends.

He absentmindedly scans the hall, he spots Oscar, also alone. Hah. Sucks to be him. His friends are talking to each other, he doesn't even get a chance to interject or add to the conversation. It's satisfying, sure, but it reminds him of his own situation. Stood alone in the canteen line. Wow. What a loser.

Josh buys his sausage roll, munching on it as he dawdles towards the exit door. It's getting warmer, with summer just starting and all, but he'd still rather be inside, away from the last of spring's breezes.

He glances at Oscar, who is stood in a position which clearly indicates he's going to interject. Once again, he is ignored. It makes Josh feel a sort of way: happy? No, not quite. Sad? No, no, not sad. Sympathy?... maybe? He gets the feeling of it, sure, but Oscar probably deserved it, he was probably- definitely- being stupid. He always was, never had anything good to say, blabbering. He blabbers. On and on. Just words, not even anything meaningful.

Josh moves on, outside, a chilly gust blowing against his face. He shivers before making his way towards the Music block in one of the buildings. He loves music, it's fun to think of lyrics and a tune to match them. It was his favourite lesson by a mile. He reckons Oscar wouldn't know a thing about music, probably thinks 'Animals'  by Maroon 5 is heavy metal.

He rolls his eyes, muttering as he pushes through the door to the music classroom, the mere thought of Oscar angering him,

"Idiot."

Hullo!!!!! 🤑 I wrote half of this in a hotel in Beijing with no wifi so I had to write it on my notes app 😁☝️ so Uhm hope formatting is all fine and dandy! Also, I have no idea of the word count until I publish this! Cool! I know it's over 400 but that's about it so this chapter is prolly very short, sorry gang 😔

Uhm also I think all the names are different apart from Josh and Oscar so 😁 don't want to be dragging other people into this... heh.... Unless they want a cameo I dunno ☝️

Also I gotta write with very few swear words.... 😔💔

Anyways by the time this chapter is published and I have wifi again I'll be in either another airport or Australia so ya 😁👍
