Sakura wrapped herself tighter in her blanket and sneezed. After spending so long in the near freezing sea water, she had caught a cold. It was mild, but still very uncomfortable. Having no one around the take care of her just made her feel worse, and more stressed.

It had been two days since her second encounter with the merman. Two days since she had been told to know her place. Since the initial excitement of discovering a new intelligent species had calmed, Sakura was able to think with more clarity. She realized that her so-called brilliant plan was actually quite dumb. She had schemed the whole thing based on probability, he would probably appear when he sees the fish in danger. Luckily for her he did appear, however she failed to factor in the possibility of him getting angry because of her stunt, she acted without considering her own safety he had tried to kill her before, what would stop him from doing it again? She failed to factor in the possibility of him just leaving without giving her the time of the day (like he had done).

Despite being warned to leave and not comeback, Sakura was not about to hide away in fear. She loved the seas, and not even a murderous merman could chase her away. It's not like she would ever be doing things to gain his attention again. If possible she wanted to meet with another merperson one not as mean and rude as the one she'd met, maybe even a mermaid if possible. Females had better chances of understanding each other after all.

The nasal congestion that came with the cold was the nasty part that Sakura hated. She began to miss the days when she could breathe with both nostrils that she had taken for granted.
The merman who was the cause of her misery was probably out there living the life. Why did he have to be so mean? Sakura felt the phantom grip of his strong hands around her neck. He was always manhandling her! And for no just reason, although the second time she was just asking for it.

What gave Sakura joy was that even though the merman had left without telling her anything, she had still been able to deduce some things from their conversation. The first thing was that he saw himself higher than humans, he hated humans too. Second thing was that he was big on protecting sea life which Sakura found as his only redeeming quality. Thirdly he was quite strong. Twice he had lifted her by the neck with just one arm. Lifting a full grown human like that wasn't an everyday feat. And lastly he could communicate fluently.
Whether the first, second, and third observation applied to merpeople in general would be something that needed more research. She had so much more to find out, but the little she had learnt was a still a win.

A week later Sakura had fully recovered and was back to her usual routine. At the back of her house she sat on a rock gazing at the massive expanse of sea as she basked under the gentle rays of the evening sun. The reddish orange glow of the skies reflected on the sea surface. The scene was mesmerizing.

Ever since her run in with the merman, Sakura had a strange attraction to the sea. She would come out in the evening and stare like she was doing now. Sakura loved the sea, it calmed her, and she felt at peace whenever she was near it. However this attraction, the pull she felt was something different. It was like the sea itself was calling out to her.

As if she were under a trance, Sakura rose from the rock she sat on, went inside and came out with her diver's suit and oxygen tank. She made her way to her boat at the dock and got in. She chose a random location, set the boat to auto pilot, and laid back letting it move while she enjoyed the feel of the wind on her face.

When the boat reaches the destination, Sakura turned off the engine and wore the remaining part of her gear. She looked around taking in the presence of the water all around her. She dove in and swam deep. As she went deeper she saw different colorful fishes swimming around coral reefs. The rays of the setting sun penetrated the water lighting it up warmly. Sakura drank in the view, it was like a painting. She closed her eyes and let herself feel like she was one with the water.

This chapter was quite short, but it's really just an opening for the next string of events. I promise the action will continue next chapter put on your seatbelts cos you'll be in for a ride.

I found the previous chapter particularly difficult to write, because I kept trying to correctly convey Sasuke's feelings and thought process. But I think I managed to do it 😅
