WE ALL sat around the dining table for Belly's birthday dinner

WE ALL sat around the dining table for Belly's birthday dinner. I still couldn't shake off my anger at my mother, but I decided not to say anything to her to avoid ruining Bells' birthday. I sat next to Taylor and spoke to her about a pair of shoes she had seen downstairs that had been mine. We had the same sense of fashion; I felt like we were the same person.

"So, Cam." Jeremiah said, causing everyone to quiet down, "You mind if I call you Cam Cameron?"

"Mm-hmm. Yeah, man." Cam replied, wiping his mouth with a napkin."Feel free. That's funny."

Susannah began talking, breaking the silence "I'm glad you're here, Cameron. I know your mom, Denise, from the club. I have heard a lot about you."

"Thank you so much for having me, Susannah." He replied, "My mom says hi." She nodded her head in response.

"Cam, have you ever had miyeok-guk before? It's a Korean birthday tradition." Laurel asked him, pouring something into a bowl and handing it to him.

"No. Looks so good. Thank you." Cam replied, grabbing the bowl and placing it down on the table.

"Why don't you eat meat, Cam Cameron?" Jere asked him, his eyes practically bulging out of his head, almost jealous.

"Uh, the meat industry is the number one contributor to global warming." Cam replied, "And I just like animals."

"Just don't come for my leather jacket," Taylor said, chuckling and looking over at me & Belly.

"I think you mean pleather." Said Steven as Taylor flipped him off. Everyone around the table laughed.

"You know, uh, actually, Belly eats meat." Jere told Cam, "So, you let her kiss you with those lips?"

"Guys," Belly said, rolling her eyes as Conrad, Jere, and Steven laughed. That had been like the one time I had seen Conrad laugh this summer.

"Stop embarrassing her," I said, laughing, taking a sip of my coke.

"No, I don't judge people for eating meat." Cam told him, " It's just, like, a personal choice. I don't care."

"So you don't mind if, uh, like, her lips touch a dead animal, and then those dead animal lips touch your lips, right?" Jeremiah asked, could he not read the room? I kicked him under the table, trying to get him to shut up.

"I don't mind at all." Cam said, unbothered, "In fact.." He said, turning over towards Belly and landing a kiss on her lips. The table erupted in different noises: Awes from Susannah and Laurel and retching noises from Steven and Jeremiah.

"All right, all right. Belly's allowed to kiss, but that's it." Laurel said, followed with a drunken laugh.

Belly rolled her eyes, "Mom, please. No. You're so not funny." She told Laurel, grabbing her glass of wine. "No more wine for you, okay?"
