Eve leaned back against the wall, exhaustion pulling at her every muscle. She glanced at Marcus, frowning as a question that had been bothering her for days finally spilled out.
"Just when did this whole thing start?" she asked, her voice low but steady. "Five days ago, everything was still…well, normal. Well, maybe with some screams here and there, but nothing like this."
Marcus sighed, running a hand through his hair. “Yeah, five days ago…things were just starting to unravel. It hit fast, though.
At first, it was scattered—people talking about strange creatures in the woods, folks going missing. The kind of rumors you hear and ignore.
Then the screams, just like you said. People getting dragged off in broad daylight, vanishing without a trace. No one believed it at first.”
Jessica shifted nervously beside them, hugging her knees to her chest. “I remember hearing the news reports about the disappearances, but no one really took it seriously. Thought it was some local tragedy…until it wasn’t.”
Marcus nodded grimly. “Exactly. And when people finally realized what was going on, it was too late.
The monsters started coming out in the open, attacking whole towns. No one could stop them, not even the police or the military. By the time people tried to evacuate, the cities were overrun.”
Eve's brow furrowed, piecing things together. "So, what, it just snowballed from there? Like, all this chaos we’re seeing now—only in five days?"
Marcus shrugged, his expression dark. "Pretty much. First, it was just a few isolated attacks, and then it exploded. It’s like they were waiting, planning. Once they got enough ground, they didn’t hold back."
Jessica looked up, her voice shaky. “But why? Why now? Did anyone figure out where they came from?”
Marcus shook his head. “No one knows for sure. There’s theories, of course. Some say it’s a cult that unleashed them—others think it’s a government experiment gone wrong. But all we’ve got is speculation. No concrete answers.”
Eve crossed her arms, deep in thought. “And no one saw it coming. One minute, life’s normal, and the next…this.” She glanced out the window at the barricades surrounding the house, then back at Marcus. “So how’d you find out about all this? How’d you know to set up these defenses?”
Marcus rubbed his chin, his eyes clouded with memories. “I was lucky, honestly. I had some contacts—people who were already on edge, who thought something big was coming.
They gave me a heads-up before the news broke wide. Told me to hunker down, get supplies. I didn’t believe it at first, but…well, after the first attack hit the nearby town, I got the message loud and clear. I fortified the house and stocked up.”
Jessica shuddered. “We didn’t have that warning. One day, we just woke up, and the world was falling apart around us.”
Eve sighed, her mind racing. “And now here we are. No answers, just survival.”
Marcus nodded slowly, his face grim. “Exactly. We’re in the thick of it now, and there’s no going back. We either figure out how to stop this, or we end up like the others—just another pile of bodies on the side of the road.”

Jessica broke the silence after a moment, her voice quiet but loaded with a question that had been gnawing at her since the chaos began. "What about the government? Did they…try to stop any of this?"
Marcus gave a bitter laugh, shaking his head. “They tried—at first. When the attacks started, they sent in military units, tried to contain the situation. Quarantine zones, curfews, even bombed some of the most infected areas. None of it worked.”
