Alex never felt as if he belonged with anyone. While the trends of the present consumed the minds of everyone, Alex fell in love with the 90s-never having lived in them, yet feeling so attached. His room almost mirrored a shrine: stacks of cassette tapes lay neatly stacked on his shelf, basketball legends across his wall, and a vintage Walkman he religiously used. To him, the 90s represented a purity and vibrancy of life that's simply not there nowadays.

Well, when Alex's best friend Kyle invited him to a campus party with a 90s theme, he could hardly contain his excitement. He brought out his old favorite retro jersey and a pair of very baggy jeans, finishing the whole look with a backwards cap. No sooner had he entered the party than it felt like stepping back in time-neon lights, old-school beats, people in oversized windbreakers-the vibe was electric.

Alex wove in and out of the party, smiling at the atmosphere that surrounded him, but somehow feeling oddly displaced despite loving the era. Later into the night, he found himself being drawn to the outside basketball court where a few had started a casual game. Picking up a ball, he dribbled and shot, lost in the rhythm of the bounce.

"Nice shot!" A voice called out. Turning, he saw a girl in a wide smile, also wearing a basketball jersey of her own.

"Thanks," he said, a little taken aback. She was more like the others at this party in name only-not just pretending to be part of the 90s vibe, but really part of it.

"Do you mind if I join you?" she asked, nodding toward the ball.

Alex tossed it to her. "Sure, why not?"

They played for a while, shooting and laughing at each other's shots. Her name was Lila, and it turned out she shared his passion for the 90s-then music and basketball. They talked about mixtapes, old-school games, and how simple things were back then. The longer they spoke, the more Alex felt that he had found a kindred spirit, someone who understood just what he felt about the era.

They finally dropped onto the bench, panting. The muffled buzz of the party still hung in the air from inside the house, but it was only them out here, and the night, and the quiet.

"Crazy how it feels like we belong to some other time, huh?" Lila reflected, looking upwards to the stars.

Alex nodded, surreal but great; this connection with someone over something so far away. "Yeah... but maybe that's why we love it. It's like an escape."

They sat there for a while longer, sharing stories of their favorite 90s memories, even though most were from movies or documentaries they'd seen. It didn't matter. They were building their own memories now-ones that, in a way, felt timeless.

As the party had finally begun to truly wind down, Lila got up and brushed off her jeans. "You know, I think we just made this night a real 90s classic."

Alex smiled. "Yeah, I guess we did."

From that night forward, their bond of friendship would grow through a mutual love for a past never lived, but that now they could fulfill in small ways together. The 90s may have been decades behind them, but the connection they found felt like it could last forever.
