FOREWORD

Chapter 1: The Eve of War

King Don stood on the battlements of the northern castle, gazing out at the lush landscape. His heart heavy with foreboding, he knew this might be his last sunset. Tomorrow, he would ride into battle against his former friend, Tarin, King of the South.

Don's thoughts turned to Rebecca, his beloved wife. Her gentle touch, her wise counsel, and her unwavering support had been his rock. He cherished the memories of their laughter-filled nights and the promises they shared.

As he descended into the castle, the warmth of the hearth and the love of his people enveloped him. The northerners admired Don's fairness, courage, and compassion. Children chased each other through the halls, their laughter echoing off the stone walls.

Rebecca awaited him in their chambers, her hands cradling her swollen belly. "My love, must you go?" she asked, tears brimming.

Don knelt beside her, his fingers intertwined with hers. "I must protect our people, our land. Tarin's ambition knows no bounds."

Rebecca's face set in determination. "You will return to me, to our child."

The next morning, King Don stood on the battlements of the northern castle, his favorite spot in the castle gazing at the peaceful town of northern Alameda. His heart heavy with thoughts as he steps down to prepare.

Gabby, his personal guard and second-in-command, approached him. "Your Majesty, the men are ready. We should depart soon."

Don nodded, his eyes still on the horizon. "Gabby, I've known Tarin since we were boys. We fought side by side, shared our deepest secrets. What drove him to this?"

Gabby's expression turned somber. "Ambition, sire. Power corrupts. He wants to unify the lands under his rule."

Don sighed. "I once thought we shared a vision for peace. Now, I wonder if I was blind to his true nature."
