Weeks passed, and while Nora and Jake continued to build their relationship at a comfortable pace, Kiomie found herself growing stronger and more confident in her journey of self-discovery. Her friendship with Theo had settled into a new rhythm—one built on mutual respect and understanding. It was peaceful, and for the first time in a long while, Kiomie felt content. But little did she know, a revelation was about to shake her calm world.
One morning, while Kiomie was getting ready for her day, she received a text from Nora. It was simple but packed with urgency: “Can we meet? I need to talk.”
Kiomie immediately agreed and headed to their favorite park, where Nora was waiting on a bench, nervously fidgeting with her phone.
As soon as Kiomie sat down, she could tell something was bothering Nora. “What’s going on?” she asked gently.
Nora looked up, her eyes clouded with uncertainty. “It’s about Jake. I found something out, and… I don’t know how to feel about it.”
Kiomie frowned. “What do you mean? Did something happen?”
Nora bit her lip, hesitating before answering. “I overheard Jake talking to his friend the other day. He didn’t know I was nearby, but I heard them talking about a girl… someone from his past. He was saying how he never really got over her.”
Kiomie’s eyes widened in shock. “What? Did you confront him about it?”
“I haven’t yet,” Nora admitted, her voice shaky. “I don’t know if I should. I mean, things have been great between us, but now… I feel like there’s this shadow hanging over our relationship. I don’t know if he’s truly moved on from her.”
Kiomie reached out and placed a comforting hand on Nora’s shoulder. “Nora, you need to talk to him. You can’t let this fester without knowing the truth.”
“I know,” Nora whispered. “But what if he still has feelings for her? What if I’m just a second choice?”
“You’re not a second choice,” Kiomie said firmly. “But you deserve to know where he stands. You deserve to be with someone who’s fully invested in you.”
Nora nodded slowly, taking in Kiomie’s words. “You’re right. I’ll talk to him tonight. I just hope… I hope I’m wrong.”
Later that evening, Nora invited Jake over, her stomach twisted with nerves. As soon as he walked through the door, she could feel the tension between them.
“There’s something I need to ask you,” Nora began, trying to keep her voice steady. “The other day, I overheard you talking to your friend… about someone from your past. Who is she?”
Jake’s expression shifted from confusion to realization. He rubbed the back of his neck, sighing deeply. “Nora, I didn’t mean for you to hear that. It’s complicated…”
“Is it?” Nora’s voice cracked slightly. “Just tell me the truth, Jake. Do you still have feelings for her?”
Jake hesitated for a moment, then sat down, his face serious. “Her name is Emily. We dated a few years ago, and yes, I was in love with her. But things ended badly, and I thought I’d moved on. When I met you, I wasn’t thinking about her at all. I swear.”
“But?” Nora pressed, sensing there was more.
“But recently, she reached out to me. It stirred up some old feelings, and I’ve been trying to figure out what they mean. I didn’t want to bring it up because I didn’t want to hurt you.”
Nora felt her heart sink. “So, you do still have feelings for her.”
Jake looked pained. “I don’t know. I’m confused. What I feel for you is real, Nora. I care about you so much, but I can’t lie—I’m still trying to make sense of what I’m feeling.”
Nora sat there, processing his words. She had hoped he would tell her it was all in the past, that Emily didn’t matter anymore. But now, she was faced with the reality that Jake was still tied to someone else.
“So, what now?” Nora asked quietly. “What does this mean for us?”
“I don’t want to lose you,” Jake said, reaching for her hand. “But I need time to figure things out.”
Nora pulled her hand back, her heart aching. “Jake, I can’t be in a relationship where you’re not sure about me. I need someone who knows they want to be with me—without any doubts.”
Jake looked devastated, but he nodded slowly, understanding her decision. “I’m sorry, Nora. You’re right. I don’t want to hurt you by being uncertain.”
Tears welled up in Nora’s eyes, but she stayed strong. “I think we need some space. I can’t wait around for you to figure this out. You need to decide what you really want.”
Jake stood up, looking heartbroken. “I understand. I’m so sorry.”
As Jake left, Nora sat on the couch, feeling a mix of heartbreak and relief. She had loved Jake, but she couldn’t stay in a relationship where she wasn’t someone’s first choice. She deserved better than that.
The following day, Kiomie came over to check on her, and Nora shared everything that had happened. They spent the day talking, laughing, and supporting each other, and while Nora’s heart still hurt, she knew she had made the right decision.
It wasn’t the ending she had wanted, but it was the one she needed. And in time, she knew that the right love—the kind that didn’t come with doubts—would find her.
