The diner buzzed with life as Mia and Liam stepped inside, the air filled with the mouthwatering aroma of grilled burgers and fries. The cheerful clatter of dishes and the hum of conversation created a warm atmosphere that was a welcome change from the desolation of the road. Mia couldn't help but feel a twinge of excitement; maybe this spontaneous detour would turn out to be more than just a series of unfortunate events.
Liam led the way to a small booth near the window, the worn vinyl seats offering a sense of comfort. He slid into the seat opposite her, his demeanor still relaxed, while Mia settled in, crossing her arms over the table. She glanced at the menu, trying to distract herself from the fact that they were still strangers, two very different people thrown together by circumstance.
"So," Liam began, leaning back against the booth with an easy grin, "what's your go-to order at a diner like this?"
Mia glanced up from the menu, meeting his gaze. She could see the curiosity in his eyes, but she wasn't ready to drop her guard. "I don't know. Depends on the mood, I guess."
Liam tilted his head, his expression playful. "Well, what's your mood telling you right now?"
"Hungry," she replied, her tone clipped. She felt an odd sense of responsibility to keep their conversation light and superficial, just as they had agreed. But every time she looked at him, she found it increasingly difficult to maintain that distance. There was something magnetic about his presence, a warmth that threatened to draw her in.
"Good choice," he said, laughing lightly. "I'll get the cheeseburger with fries. You can't go wrong with that."
Mia's stomach growled again at the thought of juicy meat and crispy fries, but she couldn't shake the lingering anxiety. "I'll just have a salad," she said quickly, dismissing the craving. "Healthy choice, right?"
"Sure, if you're trying to eat like a rabbit," he teased, the corner of his mouth quirking upward. "But I promise, you'll regret not getting the burger."
"I'm good with my salad," she insisted, her tone firm. She didn't want to admit how long it had been since she had eaten a proper meal. The breakup had thrown her off her routine, and fast food had become her crutch more often than not. But tonight, she needed to maintain control, and a salad felt like a safer choice.
"Okay, but I'm ordering a burger for both of us, just so you know." Liam waggled his eyebrows playfully, and Mia found herself fighting a smile.
Just then, a waitress appeared at their table, her notepad ready. "What can I get you two?" she asked, flashing a bright smile.
Liam quickly placed their orders, insisting on the burger for Mia despite her protests. The waitress shot Mia a sympathetic glance, as if she understood the underlying tension of their dynamic, but Mia quickly averted her gaze.
Once the waitress left, the awkwardness returned, hanging heavily between them. Mia felt the need to fill the silence but struggled to find the right words. They were two strangers navigating uncharted territory, and though they had set ground rules, it felt increasingly impossible to avoid the deeper conversations lurking beneath the surface.
"So, uh," Liam said, breaking the silence as he shifted in his seat. "You mentioned you're running from something. Is that why you took off on this road trip?"
Mia's heart raced. The rules. No personal questions. But there was something about Liam's tone that didn't feel accusatory; it felt genuine. Still, she wasn't about to let him in. "Just looking for a fresh start," she said evasively. "You know how it is."
"Sure," he replied, nodding slowly, but the look on his face suggested he saw right through her. "But there's more to it than that. What are you really running from?"
