Prologue, Swimming like a fish...Out of water--Lilith POV
As I opened the door I wondered whether exhaustion or humiliation would get to me first. Obviously, it’s time for my worst nightmare, aka physical education. I stood in the archway to the gloomily gritty pool arena, my eyes flitted between each and every one of my fellow tortured souls. Yeah, real optimistic Lilith.
The coach, whistle in hand, was glaring maliciously towards each of us as we stepped out of the disturbing change rooms and towards the pool.
My stumpy legs stumbled over to the waiting area while I surveyed my surroundings. There was a group of girls decked out in skimpily clad bikinis that were the colour of an intense hot pink that made my eyes throb. I looked down at my cherry red rash shirt and dark purple board shorts and not only felt ostentatious in the sea of pink but severely overdressed. My gaze zones in on the other participants of the pool, the boys. The boys were either dressed in board shorts and a rash shirt, like me, in black, blues and greens, unlike me, or just board shorts. No top. They must have ‘accidently’ forgotten it. Again.
A whistle blows, bringing me out of my thoughts. The coach grouchily shouts at us to line up at the blocks. My feet scuttle towards the desolate and grimy starting blocks whilst my heart hammers uncertainly in my chest. My breathing comes out in uneven pants as I notice the kick boards at the coach’s feet. I stare horrified at the deceivingly serene waves in the pool as my mind gathers my moods together in one terrified bunch.
“Alright, it’s time for you idiots to get in the pool and do the usual laps!” Coach screeched.
When no one walked onto any of the eight blocks he blows his whistle and roars, “NOW YOU INSOLENT DOLTS!” I doubt most of the class knew what he meant.
We all scrambled to stand behind the blocks and since there are twenty four of us; there are three people behind each. As I craned my neck behind me I noticed that Kevin, a total geek and or loser, was behind me whilst Johanna, a clone like sheep, was in front of me with her orange orangutan tan pulsing and burning my eyes. Johanna stepped onto block number 4 as the other seven did also. Somehow Johanna and her cronies are mainly all first onto the blocks, although some will be second, like me, but none are going to be last. If you’re terrible at swimming and or ugly, you don’t want to go either first or last because you just know that everyone is watching you. But if you go second you know that all the people that are first are just gossiping about themselves at the edge of the pool and the people who are last are totally freaking out about everyone watching them. So I guess I’m lucky today. Did you hear the sarcasm?
The whistle blows, again, forcing me to attention. You hear the splash against the pavement, whilst the water is lapping against the edges, as they dive into the water, as graceful as gazelles. You can see their arms doing stealthy strokes of freestyle as their legs glide through the water in even and enticingly alluring patterns. My legs are trembling slightly as I wobble upward onto the blocks, waiting in a stoic like position for them to finish. As I see the last person’s fingertips flick at the end wall, I realize that my time of judgement and embarrassment is upon me.
As the whistle wails, I dive, kind of like a swan if I do say so myself, and the water engulfs me in it like a lovers embrace. But, of course, that is where my gracefulness ends and clumsiness reigns. My arms slap against the water in unnatural motions whilst my legs awkwardly slam against the water in what was supposed to be kicking. But which was obviously not, by the looks of it. The time from the starting blocks to the edge of the pool seemed as if it was taking centuries as sweat started to bead on my forehead, and yes you can sweat whilst swimming, and my temperature rose. My arms increased their flapping motion in a bid to get to the edge and finish off this stupid asinine lap! Luckily I didn’t finish last, just second last, as Anna, someone who is even more tormented by the other girls than me, finished last.
We continued doing laps for the whole fifty minutes of the period and just as I was about to dive in for another disgracefully abysmal lap, coach blew the whistle and announced in a wheezing voice, as if he was the one doing the laps, that we had to go get changed for the rest of our classes. The popular guys just sauntered towards the change rooms whilst the equivalent of them, but the in girls strutted towards ours. The rest of us just lagged behind, looking dreadfully miserable as we did so.
As I stumbled inside I noted that the room was in utter mayhem with girls being half dressed whilst hearing squeals of embarrassment. The fumes from various deodorants and perfumes consumed my eyes and nose making me cough and blink away tears simmering in my eyes. I quickly got dressed under the secure and safe cover of my towel. I left my hair down and my knee high socks down on my ankles as I had just heard the bell ring and was rushing so I could be in time for my next class.
After I stepped out of the gates I heard cackling, and a moment later there was a foot sliding speedily in front of mine. I couldn’t move fast enough so I ended up tripping down into a puddle of mud, that I had only just noticed milliseconds ago, with my face sloshing into it. I pushed myself up onto my hands and groaned as I heard a “Have a nice trip?” from a malign voice echo from fading steps. And the only thought that was resounding in my head, was that at least my brother wasn't here, or our friends. Now that would be torture. And this will probably happen again tomorrowin the same juvenile, repeated way. Lucky me.
Well, this is the first chapter, I know that no totally important guys have been introduced yet but you'll notice why next chapter. I don't know whether I will post a next chapter though so please tell me if you want one. Wow, that sounds desperate. /;D
