Accidental Moments

It had become a familiar routine by now. Alhaitham and Kaveh spent almost every afternoon together, whether it was grabbing a quick snack after school, hanging out in the art room, or walking around campus, enjoying the late afternoon breeze. Alhaitham cherished these moments more than anything, but lately, something had shifted. His heart had become more restless around Kaveh, his mind often wandering to places he wasn't ready to admit out loud.

That day, as the school day ended and the golden light of the setting sun bathed the campus, Kaveh and Alhaitham found themselves once again at their usual spot—a bench right in front of the school. It had become their unofficial meeting place, where they would sit, talk, and watch as students passed by, eager to head home.

Kaveh stretched his arms above his head, his eyes squinting against the soft sunlight. "Ah, what a day. I think my brain's fried from all the studying," he groaned, leaning back against the bench, looking completely at ease.

Alhaitham nodded in agreement, though his mind wasn't exactly on schoolwork. He had spent most of the day thinking about Kaveh—again. Every time he tried to focus on his assignments, his thoughts inevitably drifted to the way Kaveh laughed, the way his eyes sparkled when he talked about something he loved, and the way he seemed to brighten every space he walked into.

Alhaitham glanced sideways at Kaveh, who was now pulling out his phone, a look of concentration on his face as he scrolled through his playlist.

"Hey, I've got something I want you to hear," Kaveh said suddenly, his eyes lighting up with excitement. He fished out a pair of earphones from his bag, one earbud dangling from his hand as he turned to Alhaitham. "You ever hear a song that just hits you right in the soul? This one does that for me."

Before Alhaitham could reply, Kaveh leaned closer, offering him the other earbud. "Here, listen with me."

Alhaitham hesitated for a moment, his pulse quickening. He had shared plenty of moments with Kaveh before, but this felt... different. Intimate. He took the earbud, his fingers brushing against Kaveh's hand for the briefest of moments, and felt a jolt of electricity run through him. Slowly, he placed the earbud in his ear, their heads now close enough that he could feel the warmth radiating from Kaveh.

The music began to play—a soft, melodic tune with gentle guitar strums and haunting vocals. It was the kind of song that made you feel something deep inside, a mix of melancholy and warmth. As the music washed over them, the world seemed to fade away. The hustle and bustle of students leaving school became distant, like background noise, as if it was just the two of them sitting there, sharing this quiet moment.

Alhaitham found himself stealing glances at Kaveh, who had his eyes closed, completely lost in the music. The sun was setting behind them, casting a soft glow over Kaveh's face, making him look almost ethereal. Alhaitham's heart raced—how could someone be this captivating?

Suddenly, Kaveh opened his eyes, and their gazes locked. For a split second, neither of them moved. They simply stared at each other, the song still playing in their ears, but the only sound Alhaitham could hear was the rapid beating of his own heart.

Ten seconds. Ten seconds of pure, intense eye contact. It felt like an eternity, yet it wasn't long enough. Alhaitham couldn't look away. His breath caught in his throat, his palms grew sweaty, and he felt heat rising to his cheeks. There was something in Kaveh's eyes, something that made Alhaitham feel both exposed and comforted at the same time. It was as if Kaveh could see right through him, into the parts of himself that Alhaitham wasn't ready to acknowledge.

Then Kaveh smiled. That soft, knowing smile that always made Alhaitham's heart skip a beat. The kind of smile that could disarm anyone. It was warm and inviting, and for a moment, Alhaitham thought Kaveh knew—he had to know.

Unable to handle the intensity of the moment any longer, Alhaitham quickly looked away, his face burning with embarrassment. He pulled out the earbud, his hand trembling slightly as he fumbled with it, and muttered, "T-The song... it's really nice."

Kaveh chuckled softly beside him, clearly noticing Alhaitham's sudden fluster. "Right? I knew you'd like it," he said, casually leaning back against the bench as if nothing had happened. But there was a glint in Kaveh's eyes that made Alhaitham wonder if Kaveh had noticed everything.

Alhaitham turned his face away, hoping the evening light would hide the blush that had spread across his cheeks. What was that? he thought to himself, his heart still racing. He had never felt so vulnerable, so exposed. It wasn't just the eye contact—it was everything. The closeness, the music, the way Kaveh seemed to exist in his world in a way no one else ever had.

For the rest of the evening, they sat together, neither of them bringing up the moment they had just shared. But Alhaitham's mind was buzzing. He knew one thing for sure: this was no ordinary crush. Whatever he was feeling for Kaveh, it was deep, overwhelming, and entirely new. And after that moment on the bench, he knew he could no longer ignore it.
