Emma stood at the entrance of the café, her heart racing as she peered through the window. There he was—Liam, sitting at a corner table, his hands wrapped around a cup of coffee, staring into the distance. He looked different. The confidence that always radiated from him seemed dimmed, his usual composed expression replaced by something more vulnerable, more human.

Her heart ached as she watched him, a flood of emotions swirling inside her. This was the man she had fallen in love with, the one who had swept her off her feet with his charm and intelligence, the one she had fought with and now missed more than she could put into words.

With a deep breath, Emma pushed open the door and stepped inside. The sound of the bell chiming over the door caught Liam's attention, and his eyes lifted to meet hers. For a moment, they just stared at each other, as if unsure of what to say, the weight of everything that had happened hanging heavily between them.

Liam stood up as she approached, his face softening with a mix of relief and uncertainty. "Hi," he said, his voice quiet, almost tentative.

"Hi," Emma replied, her voice equally soft. She slipped into the seat across from him, her heart pounding in her chest as they settled into an awkward silence.

Neither of them knew where to begin.

Liam was the first to break the silence.

"I've missed you," he said, his eyes locking onto hers. "I know I hurt you, and I've been thinking about that every day since we last talked."

Emma swallowed hard, her fingers fiddling with the edge of her napkin. "I missed you too," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. "But I also felt like you didn't have room for me in your life."

Liam leaned forward, his expression serious. "I know. I messed up. I thought I could juggle everything—work, the business deal, and you—but I couldn't. And I'm sorry. I was so focused on my career that I didn't realize how much I was neglecting us."

The sincerity in his voice caught Emma off guard. She had expected defensiveness, maybe even an attempt to downplay what had happened, but instead, he was taking responsibility. It was something she hadn't been prepared for.

"I felt like I was just an afterthought to you," Emma said, her voice trembling slightly. "Like I was always waiting for you to have time for me. I don't want to be someone you squeeze in between meetings."

Liam's jaw tightened as he listened, guilt etched into his features. "You're not. I never wanted you to feel that way. I've been thinking about everything, and I realize now that I didn't prioritize us the way I should have. I'm not good at this, Emma. I've never been good at relationships, but with you... I want to try. I want to be better."

Emma blinked back tears, her emotions swirling as she listened to his words. Part of her wanted to believe him, to let herself hope that things could be different, but another part of her was still guarded, still afraid of getting hurt again.

"I don't know if we can fix this," she said, her voice barely steady. "What if it just ends up the same way? What if we go right back to where we were?"

Liam reached across the table, his hand gently covering hers. "I can't promise that I won't make mistakes, but I can promise that I'll try. I don't want to lose you, Emma. I know I didn't show it before, but you're important to me. More important than anything else."

His touch was warm, comforting, and for the first time in weeks, Emma felt a flicker of hope. She wanted to believe him. She wanted to believe that they could make this work, that they could be happy together.

But it wasn't that simple.

They sat in silence for a while, both of them lost in their thoughts.

Finally, Emma spoke. "If we're going to try again, things have to change. I can't be in a relationship where I feel like I'm constantly being pushed aside. I need to feel like I'm part of your life, not just someone waiting on the sidelines."

Liam nodded, his expression serious. "I know. And I want you to be part of my life. I'm willing to make changes. I'll find a way to balance my career and us. I don't want to go back to the way things were either."

Emma studied him for a long moment, searching his face for any sign of insincerity, but all she saw was honesty and regret. He was trying, really trying, and that meant something.

"I love you, Emma," Liam said softly, his voice filled with emotion. "I don't think I realized just how much until I thought I might lose you. I'm not perfect, but I want to be with you. I want to make this work."

Hearing those words—the words she had longed to hear for so long—made Emma's heart ache with both happiness and fear. She had never doubted that she loved him, but love wasn't always enough. They had both made mistakes, and if they were going to move forward, they would have to face those mistakes together.

"I love you too," Emma whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "But I need you to show me that we can do this. That this isn't just a temporary fix."

Liam's hand tightened around hers. "I will. I promise."

They spent the next hour talking—really talking.

For the first time in what felt like forever, Emma felt like she was finally being heard. Liam listened as she explained how his neglect had hurt her, how she had felt pushed aside and forgotten. And in turn, Liam opened up about his own fears and insecurities, admitting that he had been so focused on his career because it was the only thing he had ever been good at.

It wasn't an easy conversation, but it was a necessary one. And by the time they stood to leave the café, Emma felt a small sense of hope. They weren't fixed—not yet—but they were trying. And that was more than she had expected.

As they walked out into the night, Liam slipped his hand into hers, squeezing it gently. "I know it's going to take time, but I'm willing to put in the work if you are," he said softly.

Emma looked up at him, her heart swelling with a mixture of love and uncertainty. "Me too," she whispered, leaning into his side.

They walked together in silence, the city lights twinkling around them, and for the first time in weeks, Emma felt like maybe—just maybe—there was hope for them after all.
