The forest seemed to pulse with life as Amberlynn moved through its twisted paths, the air thick with the scent of wet earth and the promise of rain. Every step she took deeper into the dark woods mirrored the turmoil in her heart, the confusion and the pull that had haunted her since the night the Fox had sent her away.
Forgetting him had proven impossible.
His words, his touch, his presence—they lingered like a shadow over her thoughts, refusing to let her go. It was as if something vital inside her had awakened that night, stirred by the intensity of his gaze and the feel of his hand against her skin. No matter how hard she tried to throw herself back into her old routines—healing the villagers, collecting herbs in the forest—nothing felt real anymore. Everything felt hollow, like the echo of a life she no longer belonged to.
In her heart, she knew she wasn't the same.
Amberlynn had wandered through the forest for days, searching for answers, searching for him. The deeper she ventured, the stronger the pull became. It wasn't her mind reaching out for him—there was something else at play, something ancient and powerful pulling them together like two forces destined to collide.
And now, as she moved through the moonlit woods, she could feel it again. The air was heavy with magic, the trees whispering in a language she didn't understand. Her pulse quickened, and her heart thrummed in her chest. It felt like he was near.
Her pace quickened as the path ahead narrowed, winding through the trees whose shadows seemed to reach out like claws. The oppressive weight of magic pressed against her, but she didn't stop. She couldn't stop. Not when she felt so close.
And then, as if summoned by her very thoughts, he appeared.
The Fox stepped out from the shadows, his lean, powerful figure illuminated by the cold light of the twin moons. He moved with the grace of a predator, and his eyes—molten amber behind his silver mask—burning into her with an intensity that made her breath catch. The space between them felt charged, alive with the tension that had been simmering since the night they met.
"You shouldn't have come back," he said softly, his voice a low rumble that sent shivers down her spine. The regret, the sorrow in his tone, was unmistakable, but there was also something darker.
Amberlynn's pulse raced, and despite the warning in his voice, she stepped closer, her eyes locked on his. "I couldn't stay away."
The Fox's gaze flickered with a dangerous light, his expression torn. "You don't understand what you're risking."
"Then explain it to me," Amberlynn demanded, her voice steady despite the chaos churning inside her. "Tell me why you sent me away. Why you think we can't be together."
"Because this can never happen," he snapped, his voice sharp as a blade. He took a step closer, his presence overwhelming, his gaze burning with intensity. "You don't belong in this world. You never should have been pulled into it."
Amberlynn's heart pounded in her chest, but she refused to back down. "But you were the one who brought me here. You were the one who called me. You made me feel something—something I can't just forget. So don't tell me it was a mistake."
The man before her stiffened, his face softening for just a moment before hardening again. His autumn eyes flickered with something she couldn't quite place, a storm of emotions battling behind the fox-shaped mask. He looked away, his jaw clenched tightly as if trying to contain the weight of his own thoughts. The silence stretched between them, thick and suffocating, the forest growing eerily still, as though the very trees were listening to their every word.
"I didn't mean for this to happen," he finally said, his voice low and filled with regret. "I didn't mean for you to be part of this, but the fates seem to have other ideas."
