Chapter 1: A New Game
Ethan blinked against the soft, muted light streaming through the apartment window, the unfamiliar surroundings pulling him from a deep, disorienting sleep. The faint smell of pine and something sweet—probably vanilla—wafted through the air, teasing his senses. He rubbed his eyes, the remnants of a dream slipping away like smoke. The last thing he remembered was his average, mundane life. Now? He was sprawled on a leather couch that had definitely seen better days.
“Great, another Tuesday,” he muttered to himself, sarcasm lacing his voice as he pushed himself up, his limbs feeling heavy and disjointed. “Where's the coffee?”
His eyes darted around the apartment—a decent-sized living space littered with posters of landscapes that could only belong in a poorly curated gallery. In the corner stood a bookshelf crammed with titles ranging from classic literature to what looked like a complete collection of vampire romances. Great. Just great. Had he somehow been sucked into a cliché?
The memories crashed into him like waves: faces of friends, arguments about video games, late-night snacks, and then… the moment everything changed. The electric jolt of an accident, the unbearable sensation of being pulled apart, then—nothing. Just darkness.
And then, suddenly, he was here.
A notification pinged in his mind, jolting him back to the present.
SYSTEM ALERT: Welcome to the Twilight Universe!
He rolled his eyes. Seriously? This was the afterlife? Or some twisted version of a video game? The familiar interface bloomed in his thoughts, sleek and digital, with options hovering like neon signs. He had no idea how this “system” had manifested in his mind, but at least it was consistent with his penchant for gaming.
New Quest Available: Adjust to Your New Life!
“Fantastic,” he murmured, sarcasm dripping from every word. “What’s next? ‘Make Friends with Brooding Vampires’?”
Quest Objectives:
1. Familiarize yourself with your surroundings.
2. Meet your new classmates.
3. Avoid getting too close to supernatural beings.
“Right, because that sounds easy,” he scoffed, pushing himself off the couch. His legs wobbled slightly, but he steadied himself against the armrest. “Just your average high school drama with a side of bloodsucking.”
Ethan took a moment to survey the rest of the apartment. A small kitchenette adjoined the living room, and a fridge hummed softly in the corner. On the wall hung a calendar marked with the date—September 14, 2005. Twilight’s release date, as far as he remembered. “Perfect timing,” he muttered.
As he stepped closer to the calendar, a flicker of memories rushed back: Bella Swan, Edward Cullen, the whole mess of teenage angst and forbidden love. He could practically hear the moody soundtrack echoing in his head. “Ugh, I’m definitely in a fanfiction,” he groaned.
“Hey, are you awake?” a voice called from somewhere down the hall.
“Guess I’m not alone in this weird nightmare,” he muttered, heading toward the sound. The closer he got, the clearer it became—somebody was in the kitchen, rummaging through cabinets.
He rounded the corner, and his breath caught in his throat. There stood a girl with long, wavy brown hair and a look of mild annoyance on her face as she searched for something. She looked so familiar—almost too familiar, like a character he’d known all too well.
“Who are you?” she demanded, not bothering to turn around.
“Uh, just the guy who woke up in your apartment with no clue how he got here. You know, the usual Tuesday stuff,” he replied, raising an eyebrow.
“Very funny. You’ve been asleep for hours. It’s noon!” She finally turned, and their eyes met. He recognized her immediately—Alice Cullen, the eternally upbeat yet deeply insightful character from the books. His heart raced. “What happened? Are you feeling okay?”
“Feeling great. Just navigating my new reality as a resident of the Twilight universe,” Ethan said, sarcasm thick in his tone. “What’s next? A welcome committee of vampires?”
She frowned, clearly confused. “You’re serious?”
“Dead serious,” he shot back. “I’m pretty sure I’m the chosen one—or maybe just a random dude who got dropped here. Not sure yet.”
“Listen, if you’re joking, this isn’t the time,” she replied, crossing her arms. “The Cullens are different. You don’t just—”
“Hang out with vampires? I know the drill,” he interrupted. “Look, I don’t want to be the next midnight snack, okay?”
The playful glimmer in her eyes vanished, replaced with something more serious. “You need to understand, it’s not just about you. You’re in danger.”
“Oh, great. Just what I always wanted—a life filled with existential threats and high school drama.” He took a step back, trying to process the chaos in his mind. The system interface buzzed, flashing new objectives, but he pushed it down for now. “How do I get out of this mess?”
“Follow me,” Alice said, moving toward the front door. “You need to meet everyone.”
As they stepped outside, Ethan’s mind raced with thoughts of danger, vampires, and the unexpected twists ahead. This wasn’t the life he’d planned, but if he was going to be stuck in a teenage supernatural soap opera, he might as well level up.
“Just remember,” he said, a smirk creeping onto his face. “I’m here for the snacks.”
