The night air hung heavy with anticipation as Detective Julian Carter paced back and forth on the wooden planks of the pier, waiting for Samantha and Clara's friends to arrive. The moonlight cast an ethereal glow over the water, illuminating the rippling surface like a shimmering blanket of stars. But instead of beauty, a sense of foreboding enveloped Julian, each creak of the pier echoing the anxiety gnawing at his insides.

Minutes felt like hours as he replayed the encounter with the hooded man in his mind, the weight of his words lingering like a ghost. You're too late. What did that even mean? Julian clenched his jaw, frustration bubbling beneath the surface. Clara's life hung in the balance, and he couldn't shake the feeling that he was running out of time.

When he finally spotted Samantha rushing toward him, her face etched with concern, relief washed over him momentarily. "Julian!" she called out, breathless as she reached him. "What's going on?"

"Did you bring everyone?" he asked, scanning the darkened pier for any sign of Clara's friends.

Samantha nodded, glancing back as Maya and Ryan approached, their faces a mix of determination and dread. "They're right behind me. What happened? Did you see him?"

Julian took a deep breath, his heart racing as he relayed the encounter. "The guy from the bar—he was here. He knows something about Clara."

"What did he say?" Ryan asked, his eyes narrowing with suspicion.

"He mentioned that I was too late, but didn't say where she is. Just that she's not far," Julian replied, frustration lacing his words. "I chased him, but he slipped away."

Maya frowned, her brow furrowed. "What do you think he meant by that? Is he involved?"

"It's possible," Julian said, his mind racing. "We need to figure out what he knows. But first, we need to gather more information."

The group huddled closer, their breath visible in the cool air as they exchanged worried glances. Julian pulled out the napkin he had found, showing it to them. "I found this near the bar. It mentions meeting at the old pier."

"Do you think it's a coincidence?" Samantha asked, her voice trembling slightly.

"No," Julian replied firmly. "There's a connection here. Clara wouldn't have just vanished without a reason."

As they stood there, the atmosphere grew thicker with tension. Julian felt the weight of their eyes on him, their hopes and fears resting on his shoulders. "We need to split up and search the area. Clara could have left something behind, a clue that might help us find her."

"Where do we even start?" Maya asked, glancing around nervously.

"The old pier stretches for a while. We should check both sides and see if there are any signs of a struggle or anything unusual," Julian suggested. "Ryan, you and Maya take the left side. Sam and I will check the right. Call out if you find anything."

With a nod of determination, they split into pairs, the night air thick with an uneasy silence. As Julian walked alongside Samantha, he felt the weight of their mission pressing down on him. "What if we don't find anything?" she asked quietly, her voice barely above a whisper.

"We have to stay hopeful," Julian replied, forcing a reassuring smile. "Clara is strong. She'll fight."

As they combed through the area, Julian's mind whirred with possibilities. They passed the rusting remnants of old boats, their hulking forms jutting out of the ground like ghostly sentinels. Each step brought them closer to the truth, yet he couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched, shadows lurking just beyond the edge of their vision.
