The next day, right after practice, Meki kept his word and took Vesta out to lunch. The car ride started off a bit quiet, feeling the nerves. Meki couldn't help but glare over at her from time to time, his smile never fading. Vesta noticed it too, and while she was trying to play it cool, the tension was hard to ignore.
Small talk eased some of the quiet, but the real change came once they pulled up to a small, cozy restaurant hidden away from the city's usual noise. After being seated at a quiet corner table, the energy between them began to ignite.
Meki's eyes flickered with mischief as he leaned back in his chair, eyes tracing her features. "If I didn't tell you yet," he began, his voice smooth, "you look so beautiful."
Vesta's smile widened, her cheeks warming. "Thank you, Meki," she responded softly, but there was a curiosity in her eyes as she looked at him. "Tell me something... what made you wanna take me out today?"
Meki chuckled, leaning forward slightly, lowering his voice just a touch. "Because I see something I like... and I definitely see something I want."
Her eyebrows rose in intrigue, but she still played along, the smile never leaving her lips. "Oh yeah? And what's that?"
He didn't hesitate, his smile slow, as his eyes met hers without stalling. "You," he said, the word heavy with intention. There was no teasing in his tone now, just pure, direct confidence.
Vesta bit her bottom lip, shaking her head with a soft laugh. "You are something else, Meki," she teased, but her eyes sold out the fact that she liked where this was going. "But I like it."
"Good," he said, his voice dropping slightly. "I wasn't really planning on playing it cool, Vesta. When I know what I want, I go after it."
She raised an eyebrow, playing with the straw in her drink. "And what exactly do you want from me?"
Meki leaned forward again, just enough to close the space between them a little more, his eyes not leaving hers. "I wanna see where this can go. If you feel it too... I don't want to ignore it."
Vesta's heart skipped a beat at his directness, but instead of pulling back, she found herself leaning into the tension, the unspoken connection rising between them. "Who says I'm ignoring it?"
Meki's smile deepened. "I was hoping you weren't. You're making it a tad bit hard to focus on anything else, to be honest."
She let out a soft laugh, but it was clear she was just as caught up in the moment as he was. "So... what's next?"
Meki's eyes shimmered with a blend of enjoyment and seriousness. "Well, next? I'm thinking we enjoy this lunch, and then... maybe we stop pretending we don't feel what's happening between us."
Vesta's smile was full now, her eyes locked on his. "Maybe you're right."
"Maybe?" he echoed with a laugh, shaking his head. "No 'maybe' about it, my love. I think we both know where this is going."
She leaned back, eyes dancing with mischief, enjoying how smoothly he'd taken control of the conversation. "Alright, alright... you win. Let's see where it goes."
Once back at the hotel after the day's activities, everyone was settling down, but Vesta couldn't shake the thoughts running in her mind. She had to know for sure if Meki was truly serious. The question had been sitting heavy on her chest all night. Taking a deep breath, she knocked gently at his door.
A few seconds later, Meki opened up, "Hey, you alright?" he asked, stepping aside to let her in.
"Yeah, I'm good. Just needed to talk," she responded, her voice a little quieter than usual as she stepped inside. "Hope I'm not disturbin' you."
"Nah, not at all. C'mon in," he said. He closed the door behind her and sat on the edge of the bed. She sat beside him, close enough to feel the heat between them.
There was a pause, their eyes locking in an unspoken connection. Meki leaned in slightly, sensing the tension but not rushing her to say anything.
Vesta broke the silence, her voice low but strong. "Meki, I gotta ask... are you really serious about all this? About me? 'Cause I'm not here to play around."
He didn't hesitate, turning his body more toward her, eyes full of honesty. "Vesta, I've been serious about you since I met you."
She sighed, wanting to believe him but needing that extra reassurance. "But what makes you so sure? I mean, you really felt that same spark, didn't you?"
"Hell yeah, I did," he said with a soft laugh, his hand reaching out to brush hers. "From the jump. Been about you since the moment I laid eyes on you. I ain't never played games when it comes to you."
She bit her lip, a wave of relief washing over her, but still, she had to be sure. "I just... I need to know, for real, 'cause I'm serious about this, Meki. This ain't no light thing for me."He leaned in closer, his voice dropping to a soft, more intimate tone. "And it ain't light for me either. I mean it, V. I wouldn't say it if I wasn't all in. You got me for sure."
She let out a deep breath she hadn't realized she was holding, her shoulders finally relaxing. "Okay," she whispered, her guard finally starting to lower
Meki smiled, leaning in and pressing a gentle kiss to her cheek. "You ain't gotta worry about a thing. My feelings for you? They real. You the only one I see."Feeling the weight of his words, she gave a small smile, her heart full. He stood, giving her a hand as he led her back to her room down the hall. When they reached her door, Vesta paused, turning to face him again, the vulnerability still loitering in her eyes.
Without a word, she wrapped her arms around him, holding on tighter than she had before. He held her back just as close, the silence between them filled with the unsaid promise of what they were building.
"Good night, Meki," she said softly, pulling back but not fully letting go just yet.
"Good night, my love," he responded, his voice deep, his eyes full of nothing but care.As she finally stepped back into her room, she closed the door with a soft smile, feeling more sure than ever about him, about them.
