The Psyduck always seemed to appear at the worst possible moments. As I stared at the cluster of confused golden ducks blocking the narrow path, frustration washed over me. The only other route was the one Hamu had taken. Why did life have to be so complicated on my third day of this unpredictable journey?
I sighed deeply, letting the sound echo off the cave walls, momentarily lost in thought. My eyes scanned the shadows of the cavern before I turned back to Saul. The concern etched on my face must have been evident. After overhearing Hamu's conversation with her lackeys, I couldn't shake the feeling that the path they had taken might lead to another exit—a way out I couldn't allow her to reach.
Angel: "So... where do we go from here?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
Saul didn't hesitate. He pointed decisively to a path, exactly where I had last seen Hamu. A shiver ran down my spine, and I looked at him with a mix of fear and uncertainty.
Angel: "L-let's go then..." I stammered, feeling the weight of the unknown pressing heavily on my chest.
Saul: "Don't be nervous; everything will be fine, Ang. Just relax." His soothing tone was meant to comfort me, but it barely quelled the unease bubbling within.
With a gentle grip, he took my hand, leading me forward while Ampharos trailed closely behind, its cheerful smile illuminating the darkness around us. The cave remained shrouded in shadows, but thanks to Ampharos's glowing presence, the path became a little clearer, banishing some of the gloom.
As we ventured deeper, I spotted several Water-type Pokémon dotting the cave's rocky edges. Buizel splashed playfully, Binacle clung to the walls, Azurill tumbled around carefree, and Marill rolled about happily—all peaceful for the moment. A few Psyduck lay sprawled on the ground, their dazed expressions somehow more pitiful than intimidating. Saul glanced at the golden ducks with concern, his brow furrowing, before shaking his head and guiding me further along the path. My heart raced; I never imagined this adventure could be so dangerous, especially after witnessing Hamu's weapon earlier.
Suddenly, a loud commotion erupted further down the tunnel, snapping me out of my thoughts. I exchanged a worried glance with Saul, and we decided to investigate. The noise grew louder as we approached, revealing Zane—the boy from Route 002—locked in a struggle with Hamu.
Zane: "Get off me! I've already beaten your lackeys. Do you really want to keep fighting?" His voice was defiant, his Rockruff at his side, looking a little battered from previous battles—at least, that's what I hoped.
Hamu glared at him, her teeth clenched in frustration.
Hamu: "You're such a bothersome brat. Can't today's youth sit still for even a moment?"
Zane: "If someone's in my way, I have to remove them! That's what you do!" His confidence surprised me; he was certainly braver than I had anticipated.
Hamu's surprise morphed into rage as she pulled out a weapon, pointing it menacingly at him. Zane instinctively took a small step back, trying to maintain his bravado even as fear flickered in his eyes.
Zane: "And what's that? Your toy?" He managed a snarky smile, but it didn't quite reach his eyes.
In that moment, Ivy, my trusty companion perched on my shoulder, leaped into action. With a quick burst of determination, she used Swift, sending a flurry of stars that knocked the weapon out of Hamu's hand. I stepped forward, emboldened, with Saul and Ampharos close behind me, ready to stand my ground.
Angel: "S-stop!" I called, my voice firm despite the quaking of my heart.
Hamu's gaze darted to Saul, and in that instant, she seemed to realize she was outnumbered. Retreating slightly, she narrowed her eyes.
Hamu: "I don't think a 3-on-1 is fair. How about we even the odds?"
Zane: "What are you talking about—?"
Before we could react, Hamu threw something to the ground. A loud bang echoed throughout the cave, causing a wave of panic to surge through me. Hamu glared at her lackeys, who looked utterly bewildered, before turning and sprinting away, leaving them behind. Suddenly, several pairs of eyes opened in the dim light—were they Zubat?
Before I could process what was happening, a swarm of Zubat came flying toward us, their screeching cries piercing the air.
Saul acted quickly, extending his hand and shouting,
Saul: "Ampharos, Thunder Wave!"
With a burst of energy, Ampharos jumped forward, releasing crackling sparks that arced through the air, stunning the Zubat mid-flight. They fell to the ground, paralyzed and vulnerable. As the last of the Zubat tumbled to the floor, Saul recalled Ampharos back into its Pokéball, the sunlight beginning to break through as visibility improved.
Zane turned to me, a small smile creeping onto his face as his Rockruff barked happily, tail wagging.
Zane: "Thanks! Um..."
Angel: "Call me Angel." I felt a rush of warmth at his gratitude, the tension of the moment easing slightly.
Zane: "Yeah, I remember your name; I'm just a bit forgetful. Don't worry about it." He shoved his hands into his pockets, trying to appear casual despite the adrenaline still pumping through his veins.
Zane: "I hope to see you again. I want to get to Tidil Town to earn the Mizu Badge, but I have to deal with the wild Pokémon here first." His enthusiasm was contagious, despite the chaos around us.
Angel: "Y-yeah, I guess..." I shrugged, glancing at the path ahead as Zane hurried away.
Zane: "I'll challenge you later! I'm in a rush!" he called back, his voice fading into the cave.
Saul chuckled softly, turning to me with an amused glint in his eyes.
Saul: "That guy is really enthusiastic, don't you think?"
Angel: "Yeah..." I replied, my thoughts still lingering on the chaotic encounter.
We resumed walking, making our way toward the exit of the cave, the air outside beckoning us with the promise of adventure.
Finally, we stepped outside, greeted by a breathtaking scene of softly golden sand meeting the endless blue of the sea. Pokémon and people frolicked joyfully in the waves, their laughter mingling with the gentle sounds of the surf. Across the shore stood the first town I would visit—Tidil Town. In the distance, I could see Zane already racing toward the gym, a blur of excitement.
But my attention quickly shifted away from Zane. My eyes wandered toward the nearby forest, a tantalizing world full of potential waiting to be explored. Thoughts of catching some Pokémon before tackling the first gym danced through my mind, excitement sparking within me.
And so, Angel, Saul, and their new rival, Zane, emerged triumphantly from Jade Cave. With the first badge now within reach, it was time to decide what path Angel would pursue next. Each twist and turn of this journey held promises of new friendships, fierce battles, and unforgettable experiences. This story surely holds a promising future, wouldn't you agree?
