Mia woke up with a start when she felt water dripping onto her face. She shut her eyelids back immediately when strong rays of sunshine hit them.
Where was she?
Oh that's right- most of last night had been a blur but she distinctively remembered falling asleep under the big oak tree. Yup, there she was, sitting under the tree, in the town's beloved park. "Here here old friend", she said, patting the strong tree bark. "How are you?" she asked.
Yeah no, she was not drunk anymore, that's just how she was. She liked talking to trees and birds. Not weird at all, right?
Mia searched around her pockets for her phone and finally managed to pull it out of her sad- looking back-pocket. Completely muddy. But that was the least of her problems right now. 23 missed calls from Lexi, a.k.a. her best friend since... well forever.
Mia proceeded to call her immediately. Lexi picked up on the first ring.
"Omg, where have you been?! I have been trying to call you since last night!! Are you ok? Are you hurt? ANSWER ME!!!"
"Yeah yeah- I'm alright- after what happened yesterday, I fell asleep under the big oak tree in the town park. I'm heading back to the house now."
"Good, yeah, I was sooo worried after last night. We WILL never NEVER talk about THE incident again, okay?"
"Okay. I'm headed home.. please keep my breakfast ready... I'm STARVING!!" With that, she Mia cut the line. Mia got up with some difficulty, and started walking towards the park's exit gate. No matter how drained she felt, walking through the beautiful park made her feel better. It always did. ......
"I'm here!" Mia called out as she opened the gate to the small yet cozy apartment that she and Lexi shared.
"In the kitchen!" Lexi shouted.
As Mia made her way towards the kitchen, last nights memories were slowly starting to come back, but she pushed them away. No, they needed to be forgotten, not remembered.
"Cereal for the lovely lady!" Lexi said, handing her a bowl of fruit loops and milk.
"Thanks Lex... I reallyy appreciate it", she replied, hugging her.
Lexi smiled and grabbed the newspaper while Mia ate her cereal. On the front page lay the photo of a ravishing-looking guy, in a suit and tie. In the baground there was the photo of a company. Tectonic Enterprises. As Lexi read the article, her mouth opened in horror and her eyes moved on to Mia.
"Mia, check this out! Tectonic Enterprises is planning to tear up our town park and build a mall here! A MALLL!!!"
"Gimme that!" Mia got up from her place and rushed to grab the newspaper. Rage began flowing through her eyes when she read the article. She looked up from the paper with a stern expression. "I'm going to meet with Rosie..if this is really true, we have to stop it. We just have to!" "Rosie.......your boss?! But it's a Sunday! How will you meet her?!"
"I'll go to her house",Mia replied with that expression she got whenever she got that badass attitude that Lexi adored. But Lexi looked concerned.
"Look Mia, normally, I would be all for it.. but this time, I don't think you or your company will be able to do anything."
"Why?"
"Because this time you will be up against a huge business tycoon- Victor Raymond. CEO of Tectonic Enterprises. The media basically worships him. It will be hard to get him to back down from this project. Even for Rosie having such a big influence. Her connections don't match even HALF of his, I'm sure."
-"I don't care. I'm sure he didn't discuss this with the town board. Or atleast I'm hoping so. It will be a lot more harder if they are on board with this ridiculous project. A MALL is the last thing I need."
"So you're doing it?" Lexi asked sadly, although she knew the answer. Her friend was in BIG trouble by taking on Victor.
"Let him bring it on. If he can't get enough entertainment out of his sad life, that doesn't mean he messes with ours. Our town loves it's park. If he doesn't back down from this GENIUS idea, I won't either. I have a strong influence on the council. And for what it's worth, his pretty little face-", she said eyeing the newspaper, "-won't be able to influence the media THIS time". "So his SILLY little project will be over before it even BEGINS". She stated with a smirk.
Oh boy, she had NOO idea what she was in for.
XOXO
