Now, this is a minor AU. A couple OCS are going to exist, for the sake of it. You'll see.
Before Octavio was defeated by Agent 3, he thought about his impending rematch with the Splatoon. In the rare occasion he'd lose, he's gonna need the big guns. So, he'd work on his mech? (As I write I forgot the name of the thing he's in, in the original splatoon final boss). He got a bunch of Scientists, and gave them a laboratory up in the surface. But to avoid them going rogue, he made the lab out in the splatlands, with Octolings occasionally driving all the way out there to give them their food and drinks to survive.
The scientists were given two projects to work on: Clones and a Super Android (As the ultimate trump card).
So, as a test, 20 clones were made, 10 male, 10 female. The male clones were to be cloned off of Octavio's grandson, Taro. The other half was just going to be cloned from a schoolgirl who wins a raffle (Probably Agent 8, but that's up for headcannons, I sure know that's my headcannon).
So 20 clones are made. They all turn out more or less fine, all but Clone no. Seventeen. A small mutation happened during the cloning process and he ended up with asthma...
In order to not this poor poor boy go to waste, the lab gang decided to have Seventeen be an assistant! He got to log Pixel and test her AI. (So he did that...)
So, all seemed well for 17 and Pixel. Until the Lab exploded mysteriously!

Thankfully, 17 and Pixel got hoisted out a window by the lead Scientist, Dr Kelp before getting cooked by a crisp
So, the clone and the android walked the scorching desert of the Splatlands and after a week of walking they finally make it to Splatsville (Pixel carried)
In order to make easy cash, the duo get jobs at Grizzco, in which they meet Ellie, and Maria, two siblings. Ellie is an Inkling, and Maria is adopted (She's an Octoling).
