Part 7: Breaking Point
The storm had been brewing for weeks, but now, with the plan set in motion, the tension that gripped both the Armed Detective Agency and the Port Mafia was suffocating. Every interaction felt like walking a razor’s edge. And for Dazai and Chuuya, balancing love and danger was proving more difficult than either had anticipated.
Back at the Port Mafia headquarters, Dazai stood in Mori’s office once again, the familiar weight of deception pressing against his chest. Mori watched him with those calculating eyes, always knowing more than he let on.
“I must say, Dazai,” Mori began, his tone smooth, “you’ve seamlessly stepped back into your old role. I had my doubts, but you’ve proven yourself to be... indispensable.”
Dazai smiled, though it didn’t reach his eyes. “You know me, always the overachiever.”
Mori’s eyes gleamed. “But there’s one thing that concerns me. Your... closeness with Chuuya.”
Dazai felt his pulse quicken but kept his expression calm. “What about it?”
Mori leaned forward, steepling his fingers. “I’ve always allowed some level of personal attachment in this organization, but this... romance... could become a distraction. I hope you aren’t letting emotions cloud your judgment.”
Dazai chuckled, his easygoing façade slipping into place. “Oh, Mori-san, you worry too much. If anything, Chuuya and I are more effective as a team. You know how well we work together—chaos and all.”
Mori studied him for a moment longer before nodding. “Very well. Just remember, Dazai, love is a dangerous game, especially in this world.”
As Dazai left Mori’s office, his mind whirled. He had expected Mori to notice, but he hadn’t expected it to bother him so soon. It was clear now—Mori had his suspicions, and they were running out of time.
Later that night, Dazai returned to the apartment he and Chuuya had been using as a safe house. When he walked through the door, the smell of something burning hit him.
“Chuuya!” Dazai called out, moving toward the kitchen. “Are you trying to burn the place down?”
Chuuya emerged from the kitchen, covered in flour, scowling. “It’s called cooking, you idiot. Something you clearly don’t appreciate.”
Dazai smirked, leaning against the doorframe. “Well, at least it’s edible... I hope.”
Chuuya shot him a glare, but there was a softness in his eyes that he reserved only for Dazai. “What’s got you so smug today? Mori up to his usual tricks?”
Dazai’s smile faded slightly, his tone growing serious. “Mori knows about us. Or at least, he suspects.”
Chuuya’s expression hardened. “How much does he know?”
“Enough to make me worried.” Dazai sighed, running a hand through his hair. “We need to speed up our plan. Mori’s patience won’t last long, and I don’t want to give him the chance to use us against each other.”
Chuuya clenched his fists, the tension evident in his posture. “We need to hit him before he hits us. You sure you’re up for this, Dazai?”
Dazai stepped closer, his gaze locking with Chuuya’s. “I’ve never been more sure. We’ll take Mori down together. But... we need to be smart about it.”
Chuuya’s scowl softened, and he gave a reluctant nod. “Just don’t get yourself killed, idiot. I’m not dragging your corpse out of here.”
Dazai grinned, slipping his arms around Chuuya’s waist. “Well, that’s a relief. I’d hate to be a burden.”
Chuuya rolled his eyes, but his hands rested against Dazai’s chest, his heart pounding beneath his fingers. “You’re already a burden, but...” He hesitated, the vulnerability in his voice barely noticeable. “Just stay alive, okay?”
Dazai leaned in, pressing a soft kiss to Chuuya’s forehead. “I’m not going anywhere.”
